I just went and took the permit test , general knowledge, air brake and combo and failed all three . Not happy but going back next weds to take again. The questions on the practice tests from this site and other free ones didn't prepare me for what was actually on the test . Any recommended free sites I should check out? I am in NJ if that matters.

    Thank you!

Are you going to school? AFAIK all/most schools provide practice tests and get you well prepared. All I can suggest is to read the NJ DOT CDL manual thoroughly.

Yes I am reading it through now and did before . I am taking classes after the permit . At least I know now what to expect from the test.

is the best site I have found.

One tip for studying, that worked best for me, don't answer any of the questions. Scroll to the bottom and click for your score. It will show the correct answers and you will not be confused with all the other wrong answers.

    Read and read and reread.

then go back and take the tests.

This site also has a testing section, but I was not impressed with the tests.

I appreciate the advice everyone! I do have the manual and I did read through it with a highlighter but after I was done I just did the practice tests . I realize I need to review the material more so and not just do the practice tests .

    Thanks again!

    That's what worked for me.
I would read the book again and again, then take a test, then go back to the book and study until I understood what I got wrong on the test. Lather, rinse, repeat until you have the material down pat. I also re-read the relevant section of the DMV manual about 25 times, maybe more.

Agreed, I pretty much have the practice tests memorized so now I will go back and make sure I I re-read all sections and sink in the info I saw on the test that wasn't on the tests . The test itself was steaight forward it wouldn't have been hard if I reviewed the material more. At least I know what to expect now.

I have been studying my manual for at least an hour or so everyday, and I use that site to take the practice questions a couple times a week. I don't want to be that guy in class that gets held up getting a permit, I want to get in there, get the permit, and move onto the driving as soon as I can. The quicker I can get it done, the quicker I am to a paycheck.....just my stance.

EXACTLY! that is how I am looking at it as well! I just want to be done with the formality of the written test so I can move on ASAP to the driving portion and get going with this career..
