Inner axle passenger side brake caught fire yesterday. All my brake components are pretty old, but I have been on top of adjustments etc. My question is about S-Cams.

    I’m replacing 6x
    - Brake shoes
    - Drums
    - Chambers
    - Slacks
    - and wheel bearing (in & out) and seals on axle that caught fire.

should I go ahead and swap all cams?
What oil do I need to use for wheel hub/& diff?
Should I do all bearings/seals or just the one?

reason for fire: spring off adjuster? apparently didn’t release brakes on that single side and caught

What year is the truck and are they original? S cam and bushing kit was like $100 per spot I think when I did mine, if it’s an older truck and you plan on keeping it I would just go ahead and replace it all so you know what you have.

make sure you use both seals go in to the diff, that way the grease pops by the slack instead of into the s cam and getting all over the drum, and use stemco or other quality wheel seals so you don’t have to do them again, and to take up any slack you may have on the spindle

I just did synthetic 75-90-140 or whatever Eaton recommended for the diffs, each one should be about a 5 gallon bucket or so, was like just over $200 per iirc

No the grease seals on the s cam that get installed in the tube going to the slack, there are 2 bushings in the tube as well.

you have the wheel seal on the inside of the hub then the axle gasket/silicone you can use on the outside

okay, you’re talking about the bearing kit. I bought six cams and six kits yesterday. Is the bearing kit fairly straight forward to swap?

not hard, just time consuming, clean the grease out and punch everything out, use a slightly smaller socket then the tube and lightly tap it in evenly

Everyone is looking to sue for the easy, big money. Brakes aren't the place to be cheaping out. Brake parts aren't that expensive, replace everything. To much liability nowadays. :occasion5:
