Hi! I just received my CDL- class A permit. I don't have the option of gong to a truck driving school. I'm a firemen and a few other factors attribute to not being able to attend a school. I was wondering if I could get some advice or if anybody might know someone that would be willing to help me get some driving time and could help me on my pre trip and air brakes inspection. I've been driving a fire truck for 10 years.
Im from Birmingham Al.
Need help/ advice

Some CDL schools have night or weekend classes for students that can't attend full time school.

I assume you work for the city of Birmingngham? Check with your cities Public Works or Utilities director..Alot of medium and larger cities actually have one or more people that are city employees but are also licensed by the state to be commercial driving instructors. This makes it easier when an employee gets an internal promotion to a new position that requires obtaining a CDL in a certain timeframe. I know this to be fact as I used to be an employee of a larger city in south Florida, and I actually obtained my CDL A this way years ago (already had my class B, but know of others who went this route with just a regular license)
This has several advantages, among them- they usually are able to work one on one with you, they are also invested in you passing, and will help you in areas where you need specific work, etc.....
Hope this helps, and good luck!JReding and BrenYoda883 Thank this. -
I'm a firefighter but not with Birmingham. I just live there. That's great information thought mudguppy!

Just wondering, why you are quitting the firetruck driver gig?
I'm sure you guys get alot more respect than we do... and you can kill traffic wherever you go. -
Well, I'm 30 and want a family. The fire department isn't the way to go. I'm not actually wanting to go over the road. I'm wanting to work as a concrete pump operator and I need my cdl. The fire department job is kind of rewarding and respectful but I'm ready to move on from it. 9.91 an hour to work holidays and weekends..... :/
BrenYoda883 Thanks this. -
Jeez man, $9.91 / hr???
Might wanna consider the LTL game... Mid $20s / hr here in our waters.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Yep my brother is getting his class A CDL the same way, but only because he can't afford the school just yet. I told him to wait until he gets his tax's because the community college is only 1,600 and its 8 weeks long so he will have well over the 160 hours required by many companies to start him out, but he is still around here asking people to borrow there tracker and trailer to go take the test, I said good luck with that, but I wish you the best and I would say look into weekend classes
