With a 13 speed, you might as well start using the splitter. You'll find that your acceleration & pulling power will increase

    What year is this truck??

If it truly is a 3406 and not a 3406E she might be right about it falling on its face at 1500 and needing to go up to 2000.

A properly running E series will absolutely fall on its face above 1600/1700.

Where is the owner of this truck?
    He should be showing you.

It'd be so much easier to show than try to tell.

With an E series shift at 1500/1600 on level ground or even lower if you don't have much of a load. This is a powerful engine with a lot of torque and should be able to pick up and go even at 1300/1400 shifts.

If you are loaded heavy and trying to get moving on a hill you may have to go up to 1700/1800 to shift.

I've had a couple of CATs and never got them above 1800 for any thing. Then again I had A LOT of practice.

With a little practice you'll soon be a pro.

These engines DO NOT like high RPMs. Keep those Rs under 1600 and you just might see the MPGs go over 6.
    With a 96 T600 3406E and 13 spd if I drove no more than 68 I could get over 7.

oh... I was pulling a hill and if I didnt shift at 2000-2100 it would fall under 15 rpms.. They say dont lug it under 15 or the words-new pistons- will scream your name...

That truck as most are setup to have optimal torque between 1200-1500 rpm's. You should be shifting at about 1600 or 1700 rpm's and USE THE SPLITTER, that will allow you to stay in the optimal power range. The only time you don't need to use the splitter is if your running down the highway empty.

If you still can't figure out how to shift it right you need top have your boss or someone that knows how to shift one TEACH you how.
