In that yr a 3406E the HP is right.
My 96 was 435 hp, pulled like one tough SOB.
Out pulled my neighbor's C-15 set at 475. And got much better MPGs.

I bet she is just used to a bigger motor maybe. I remember going from a 250 Cummins to a 335, I thought I had arrived at Nirvana!
It would be like driving a sewing machine today.girlygurl Thanks this. -
I think you are having gear selection problems. A 13 speed is a cross between a 9 speed and a super 10. Drivers should drive a super 10 before they graduate to a 13. But you can still learn it easy
Think of a 4 speed shift pattern. Forget the two reverses on top left and 1st/low on bottom left for now. You only need them starting out heavy or on a hill. Just like a 9 speed. You go through the H pattern, flip the black switch up and go through the H pattern again.
Now add the red button, it is used in between each stick shift.
Example...H pattern pattern again, black button down, red button back... you are in 2nd and ready to start.
So starting out black button down, red button back, shifter in the middle slot/up, you are in 2nd
One note, the red button can be moved ahead of time while increasing tach. It will shift on it's own when you let off the throttle.
Okay, start in 2nd, increase throttle, slide red button forward, 1600, let off throttle, truck shifts on own to 3rd and you throttle again, slide red switch back, shift shifter to down and you are in fourth... throttle, slide red switch forward under throttle, let off at 1600, truck shifts on own to 5th.
Keep going until you have shifter at bottom right in 8th, then comes next step.
In 8th gear, flip black switch up, slide red switch back and take shifter back to middle up again where 2nd was. You are now in 9th. Throttle, slide red button forward, let off throttle and truck shifts on own. Keep going and you'll make it to 13.
Down shifting, red button can still be used ahead of time, flip, rev to 1600 and it'll catch the other way.
Once you get use to it, you can start double shifting, skipping gears. You tach a little higher and lower when you double shift, but you should be using out at 1600 and in at 1200 for now. 2100??you are doing something wrong or the tach is not working properly.
Either on the dash or on the drivers visor is the shift pattern. Look at it.
Also their are other good threads and pictures here on 13 speeds.
Just type 13 speed in the search feature and you'll find them.
Overview..
Black button used once to shift between H pattern.
Red button used every shift.girlygurl Thanks this. -
Hey Condo! You're talking 18speed there! 13 you don't split the low side!

i had a e-model that would skull drag 80,000 without a problem.....seemed the heavier the load the more it liked it....18sp but it was one tough kitty.....i wanna say fuel or air deprivation but you said you had it in the shop...i dunno...im thinkin your skipping the split is causing engine lug......what rears?

Edit directions, shift normal through low side flip black switch up, then as directed.

This truck had a new cam put in by Peterbilt in March, hasnt been the same since and yes I mentioned that to them and of course w/out $$$ they said, "ok let us know when you can bring it in"....
Im not used to power, Im used to this truck - a 13 speed (only) and as mentioned, I think its the splitter issue...
And yes I do think the tack is off because when I turn the motor off the tack flys back the other way and not to 0...###### driver!!! Am I going to blow the motor? It sounds right and feels right at those speeds.Again, the printout says 1600-2120....
And was only shifting high at 2100 in mts cuz it was lugn after dropping under 1500Last edited by a moderator: Aug 26, 2010

Is it a stock Cam? If it was a Paccar shop that put the cam in, they should have records. I have seen so many "Mechanics" bluff their way through things like it might inconvenience them to do it right the first time. How high does the Pyro get under a long pull?girlygurl Thanks this. -
Hello,
Thanks for you help and I just spoke w a prev peterbilt mechanic and he said the motor is set up all wrong, I gave him info off the printout and he will be fixing it. He said with those numbers its cant catch back up to itself and I said I know, I can run beside it and it wouldnt catch me... So hes gonna fix it for me. yea! So now onto practicing shifting... Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate it!! The owners sick btw... I need to find info on my own right now cuz he said it is my truck- do what you need to do -and I want to do right by him. Thanks again. gLast edited: Aug 26, 2010
