Hey Truckers,
I travel a lot for business. Probably not as much as you all do, but a lot. I want to purchase a very good quality professional CB. I'm looking at the Galaxy brand. I stopped at a CB store at a truck stop in Georgia, and the guy was telling me that a standard CB radio with channel 19 is about worthless today. That most truckers use sidebands, or the ABCDEGH channels shown on some of the Galaxy CB radios. Is this true, or was this guy just trying to sell me a $400.00 radio? I don't mind spending some money for a good radio, I just don't want to waste my money. For example, the Galaxy 949 does not have the knob with the ABCDEFG options, but the Galaxy 33 does! Do you (truckers) pretty much still use channel 19, or the other "specialty" channels? I just want to buy a nice radio, but don't want to waste money on options I don't need.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

worthless ??? lol !!!!! I've got the Cobra 29 LTD. with a good cable and a Wilson 2000 antenna. don't need a gazilllion watts, ain't trying to talk to china. had mine peaked and tuned to 20 watts. works just fine and it's almost 20 yrs old. you were fed a sales pitch.
the radio sells for about $100-$120 at the truck stops. -
Andy,
The 33 is a 10 meter ham radio if I'm not mistaken. Not legal to use when it's been modified for use in the CB band, unless the power is within CB limits. That said, I have a couple of 949's and they are pretty good radios. The key is a good antenna setup with quality coax and an antenna with as close to 1:1 swr as possible. -
That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure. The Cobra 29 is quite famous when it come to CB radios!

So what are all those ABCDEF channels for? How about the Wilson 5000 for an antenna with the Galaxy 949 or the Cobra 29? I have heard good things about those!

Frequencies selector within the 10 meter band, or within CB band if modified. I had a 29 years ago, so no recent experience, but the 949 works great with the Wilson, and has a built in SWR meter so you can easily tune your antenna.

the 5K is better ,but what is your goal in the radio? The A,ect channels, lol no clue.you can get a 300 watt amp and a $500 dollar antenna, spend thousands of bucks if you want. lol.
my goal is to hear a few miles around and keep track of traffic conditions. Don't need the echo boards or all the kid crap.
have had 2 radios in almost 30 yrs. both 29's. have served me well for my purpose. -
Well said, Numb.

I've used a 29 for years and with a wilson antenna pair have never needed anything else. Of course, drivers being drivers some need the fancy Galaxy or Ranger stuff and thats just fine if they want to spend their money on that. -
Seriously, with the smart phones and gps units now what are you needing to talk with people 20 miles down the road for? Just another thing that technology has gone by. I still think that a cb should be standard equipment for a truck but its becoming less so as time go's by. I ran for several years without one as I ran NJ/NY metro and got sick of hearing the foulness and silliness so never turned it on.
