Hello All, I'm new here and I have enjoyed looking through the forum! I have looked and I didn't really find an answer to my question here (although I probably missed it ).
I just received my CDL and have all the endorsements that come with it ex. passenger.
I am looking to work in the oilfield here in New Mexico and have come across a couple offers. I talked to a guy and I can hire on hauling acid for $17 hour w/overtime and good long hours.
Then I talked to another place witch pays by the load. He showed me a sheet that had a column that had miles ranging from 25 to 400, then a corresponding column that had the money you got paid per load. I.E. 50mi=$75. He also said there was L.I.P. pay for hazmat witch was $25 more. He also stated that if I wanted to work that I could make really really good money. Like in the six digit good.
My only problem with the second one is: sounds to me like its not a question of working hard as to hustling and probably driving illegally? I say that because I would have no control over how long the traffic, unloading, waiting time etc.... took.
To be honest I just wan to make the most money possible. I am single w/no kids and a really good work ethic. This is a big decision for me and was hoping to get some insight. I would really like to know of anyone on about the same pay schedule as the second job I described and if they are happy with it. Can you really get 4-6 loads in a day or is it just luck and driving 40 hours straight?
Thanks in advance![]()

where are these companies at in new mexico?
-
Lovington NM

Dunno, but if it were me I'd take the acid job....if I thought they'd hire a woman I'd apply there myself since I'm within commuting distance of Lovington.
lawdog82 Thanks this. -
I've been driving a box truck here in Clovis, NM and the Ruan tanker drivers are crazy here. Ruan drives milk to a cheese factory around here and there are hundreds of dairies in the back country. They drive like maniacs.
Groendyke has some oil hauling jobs over in Artesia, they also take recent graduates. I wish I'd known about them sooner. Looks like they have some nice equipment. Look them up. They look like a nice company.lawdog82 Thanks this. -
I have heard of Groendyke but I think they just deliver gas to stations in town. I would rather my first year of driving be out in the patch or on the highway lol. I also have one year exp in the oilfield, so that is a big plus when I talk to these employers.
-
Hm....according to the Groendyke website they require 1 year experience. I only have 4 months myself and that was OJT, not school. Otherwise, I'd sure think about them.

Lawdog, if you've been in the patch already then you've probably heard the stories about the boom or bust times....let me tell ya, as a water hauler I can attest that it's true. When I first hired on with Key in Seminole we were constantly having to fudge the logbooks to make sure we had enough hours, now I'm lucky to get 30 hours a week. Take my advice on this...if you have the chance to work with an acid crew, TAKE IT. You'll be better off in the long run as far as hours are concerned.
-
Your right hunnydew, I'm just seeing dollar signs with the other job. The Company is Lonestar Distribution inc in Hobbs that is by the load.
-
I hear you...the thing is, there are no guarantees on how many loads you'll get. The acid crews stay busy...you'll see more dollar signs there, trust me.
