I am having trouble deciphering the difference between an auto shift and a ultra shift. I was told an auto shift lets you shift the same way a manual trans but shifts one gear. Also, are 9spd's or 10 spd's any good in mountains?

auto is just that, an auto
ultra is a semi-auto....has a clutch
i might be wrong, never even seen these two clamities, but i dont think so
as for the 9 and 10 spd questions......you mean you dont know?
in short no!
gear gaps are to wide to keep any simbalance of a constant speed and/or fuel mileage
13 or 18 is much gooder in 'dew big ole hills called the rockiesThe Challenger Thanks this. -
Can you run a 13 spd like a 9?

Not sure what you have? "AS" in that part of the RTO number which designates the type of transmission? Made for Volvo, by Eaton in or about 2002 model year, only for USxpress? This would explain the auto shift name. "AS" but was experimental only.
That transmission type became the Ultra-shift Eaton known as the DM3.
I prefer the 16spd side by side in mountains.

basicly a 13 is a 9 with the ability to split the top half the box
7/8th are the same gear, but you, via a splittler you take the gear into o/d, lowering the ratio, drop the switch back and go to the next hole, repaet process
for more info, please search (using the search box)for the 13 spd thread that is on here and was discussed within the last few months

I do not own or operate a rig. I do not drive but want to after college. I want to learn as much as I can about transmissions. If you want to help, we cool, if not please do not contribute garbage to this thread.

Then what you are calling auto shift could be the Eaton Super Ten?
The experimental "AS" and the "DM3" have had a lot of problems in mountains and backing into docks. Without a clutch you have your limits on control. The trucking industry and Eaton have ignored the safety factors for the budget and ease of training new students. Don't worry the trees will catch you if you fall off the edge of the mountain. -
king, first off i know you dont drive yet, and i also know you want to
secondly i thought i was helping, via the link , if that dont clear it up i dont know what will
thirdly, if you want to be condesending please do not ask any more help from me
and lastly, get a sence of humor man! -
Eaton Ultra Shift is total auto matic-no clutch pedal.
Auto Shift has clutch pedal used for starting and stopping. Shifts are automatic after starting off with pedal.
Have driven auto shift a lot lately. Never have used ultra shift, but have seen ops video on Eaton Roadranger site. -
i stand corrected, humbaly of course
thanks for the clarification, now i know for sure
but i still wont drive one!!!LOLBig Duker Thanks this.
