    Hi,

I think it owuld be best to have your BF teach you what he is looking for. it only takes a few hours to learn, but your BF knows where he likes to run, how much he needs to get paid etc. Its also not that simple. A great run into an area with no freight coming out isnt a great run unless it pays enough to pay for a poor load or no load coming out. Knowing the best areas to run is important. Also all owner operators have a different level of expense. Personaly I know I can't move my truck for less then .48/mile. If your bf's truck cant move for less then .60/mile, then he may not want to haul some of the freight I might be willing to haul. Also, does he like long haul or regional. Multi day runs? Alot also has to do with his remaining legal hours when he drops off his load. Its not supper hard, but there is a lot that goes into it that only your BF would know.

For me the most important things to ask agents are, Pay, Fuel Surcharge, Miles, weight (I can haul 5,000 pounds for about .15.mile less then 45,000 pound to do better fuel economy), type of cargo, type of loading and unload, timing and delivery appointments. If he is not with a carrier that makes sure he gets paid, you need to consider the customers history and how he will get paid.

Maybe you consider running with him for a couple weeks on the road? Would be a good opportunity to get some "ojt" and understand what he does which will help you see the big picture and understand his needs.....just a thought.

Thank.you for.your response. I guess if that much goes into it i should get him.to teach me. All.i really.know.is its a 48' step bed i know he likes coast to.coast but I've also seen.him turn down 2500$ loads and didn't understand why so i guess i should ask him to.show me what has.looking for

Really I don't know if this is something you can teach to someone who has no practical trucking experience. That is not to knock you or anything. You just don't know what you don't know and it seems difficult to catch on to subtle trends and hints when you have no basic understanding for guidance. I have seen firsthand a hired dispatcher to book loads for a truck who thought they knew what they were doing and this person was costing a few operators some big bucks left on the table. Saw it first hand in a tight market where we both booked loads going home from the same broker lol. Mine was for big bucks and the other was fuel money. Didn't have a clue. Your bf if he has been in the industry a while ought to have some good instincts. If he's got patience and a head on his shoulders he'll figure it out. Everyone starting out like that spends half a 10 hour break looking at freight and running numbers. I still do it from time to time. It's a good sign I hope he does well. If he wasn't putting that kind of effort into it he'd never get anywhere and then you'd really be stressing.

Main points to look on a haul are

-rate per mile (including empty miles to pick up)
    -weight of the load
    -area its going to
    -time invested in a load

Print This Part & Save it

    1- Ask your BF
if he has the log book hours to Pick/unload the freight
before you commit to it & what size trailer does he have 48/102/or 53/102 foot ??

2- Ask your BF what is the minimum $ per mile that he will haul a load for? & minimum Distance Write it down...a general answer like as much as you can get is not an answer Be specific.
3- Ask your BF what states he will go to? Write it down any where is not an answer Keep the blame game out of it
4- Ask your BF what is the maximum weight that he wants to haul? Not How much he can scale? How much weight he wants to haul? Write it down
5- Ask your BF what if he want loads that involve driver loading/unloading (lumpers 4 Vans-Reefers) Tarping (Flatbed) Write it down..
6- Ask your BF if he wants to Haul Hazmat Loads Vans-Flats trailers or over dimensions Flatbeds Write it down.
7- Ask your BF what if he wants to go to a tolls infested areas Like the N.E. coast Write it down....Warn him if he says yes he will go that he may have to sit a while before you can find a load for him...Keep the blame game out of it
8-Ask your BF if he has what it takes to haul a load like load locks, blankets, dunnage, straps, tarps, etc.
9- Ask your BF he will drop his trailer in a shipper/receiver yard to load/unload (bad idea) if he said yes
10-Ask your BF to read & sign his answers if I'm not mistaken we men R full of crap. When it's all good we take credit for it but when the dodah hit the fan it's the wife's fault.:biggrin_2555: Schmukkkkkks

Now Dealing with the Devil (Most Brokers) :biggrin_2557:

Find the Load with the spec's above & Call the broker on that load
Keep this in mind If they ask you questions about you before they give you the information on the load you are calling about. Then it is time to consider this load GONE or IFY Don't wast your time with this kinda load. You only give your info after you know all a bout the load & decide if this load is for you or not or even if the load is still available. Example :biggrin_25517:= you :biggrin_2557:= Broker

:biggrin_25517: Hi I am calling a bout this load from tampa,FL to Knoxville ,TN
:biggrin_2557:O yahhh please hold ( the longer you hold on the phone the more disparate you are to take it hint hint Cheap crap ) or they are digging up your area code to see if this load will take you home hint hint cheap crap CH.Crapinson is good @ that

:biggrin_2557: Hi this is LSC (Lying sack of Crap) How may help U?
:biggrin_25517: Yeah I am calling about Bla bla bla Repeat the same thing before

    IF U GET THIS GUY
:biggrin_2557:What is you MC # or what is your call back # or who R U With what company? if you don't know this schmuck and he is of no value to you Hang up & move on.This Bozo is taking names & phone #'s to start a bid on the load & when you bid on loads Guess who wins?.. Yahhhh NOT YOU

    IF U GET THIS GUY
:biggrin_2558: Yes we have this load and he starts to spell out the beans Good brokers will tell you what the load pays first & then the details after,
Shaddy ones will say things like Oh This is an easy load NO touch freight & try to minmize the effort to haul it as if it was a partial load. That means it Aint Gonna Pan out for you.....Start walking a way from this trap & a waste of time. especially from the ones that says How much will you haul it for? this is a sign for cheap loads or bidding wars

    Now Load Boards

Simple after you consider what your BF wants to haul you go to the board sign in
From Tampa FL TO Knoxille TN OR Just FL to TN Then Type of trailer your BF Has and so on anything over 1 hr old is there for a reason Trashy Loads pay attention who is posting the same load with cheaper price's & mark those thugs ander your DO NOT CALL LIST most likely they are double brokering the load or for what ever reason this is a problem child load.

    Class Dismissed
4 Now over & out Got to go
