I am a new driver with currently six months experience, I am starting a new dedicated run with my company that has me going from Memphis Tn, to Ontario Ca. I have heard that in California you have to slide your tandems all the way forward or you will be fined, also I was told that if you go into Ca, with a dirty truck, you could get a 125.00 fine. I would really appreciate any input on this,

    Thanks,
    Jason

About the trailer tandems, yes you need to keep them all the way forward, or pretty close to it. The Bridge Law in Calif is 40' from the king pin to the center of the rear axel. I have run th tandems back to as much as 5 holes and been fine, but......:biggrin_255:
Now,about the fine for a dirty truck......WTF?? A fine if I don't wash my truck? Never heard of that, and I live in CA and cross the Banning and Cajon scales a lot. I think you heard a super-trucker story there.

Just run with your axles as far forward as your weight allows and you should be ok. What are you hauling, Is it a heavy product? If the load is light, just run the axles as far forward as they will go and don't worry about it. If I have a load under 36,000lbs, I run the axles forward and have the loader put at least one single in the nose to keep my drives from being over. Anything over 36,000 gets scaled.

not sure of the weight but I would think that it is going to be farely heavy, I am hauling US mail but I will keep the tandems as far forward as I can, probably about the third hole. Thanks for the help.

Chill out, bud. If you are hauling mail, then you will be running light (9-10k). If you are hauling machines for the post office, you will be heavy! And 40' from your kingpin to tandems means you can only be a few holes back (from all the way forward), like around the 5th or 6th hole (like someone already mentioned).

Yes, believe it or not you CAN get a ticket for a dirty truck when you are in CA! But it is a law that has very very seldom been used! Remember that "dirty" or "clean" is a matter of opinion. So CHP hates to use it, as it is SO EASY to get it thrown out. The only time I have ever heard of it being used was ONCE when a trooper was all ticked because he thought he caught someone running over-weight and over hours, but since they were hauling perishable, fresh from the field agricultural produce, standard weight and standard hours do NOT apply.. He ended up writing up a truck that had JUST come out of a muddy pear orchard! For a "dirty" truck! (Got thrown out by a "Good Ole Boys Club" judge!)

last spring I was hauling cinder block and cement bags through the 91 / weir canyon scales with cracked windshields, filthy beat up shaker uprights, nasty mac belly dumps and scary old pete transfers that looked like they had been running in iraq and tipped back on the rubber a few times. I never got pulled in, bald tires and all. the trailer lites were out most of the time, so we didnt touch the brakes in there. we were on their list alright. I don't know why I didn't get stopped there. I did get stopped in Irvine on sand canyon road for excessive smoke and the ensueing laundry list of equipment violations my crappy employer allowed. they would fix a road flat, but not a bald tire. I left them in my wake.
