I am suppose to be on a bus to go to trucking school in the morning but in doing a last minute read over the multiple documents I was sent I found one that says I need to have my original birth certificate which I don't have. I am in California and need to know from those that have applied for your CDL permit/license if you were asked to present it or not.

I went to Stevens transport and everyone was asked to give theirs. They made copies and gave them back.
-
Do you have a passport? Would that be acceptable if you do?
-
an original birth certificate is required by law. to get a license I think copies are acceptable to comapnies.
-
No I dont have a passport. I did however read on the CA DMV site that if I have an original CA DL I dont need a birth certificate to apply for my CDL permit or license which I do have. Now I am just debating whether to get on the bus or not in the morning. The only reason I can think of why I would need it would be for the DMV but this is what it says on their site
"To apply for a commercial permit, you will need to:
Visit a DMV office (make an Appointment(s) for faster service)
Complete a California Driver License Driver License Application form (DL 44 or DL 44C). (An original DL 44C form must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.)
Complete a 10 Year History Record Check form (DL 939) if you have been issued a driver license in the same or different name to operate any type of motor vehicle in another state or other jurisdiction within the previous ten years
Give a thumb print
Have your picture taken
Provide verification of your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.
Verify your birth date and legal presence (you may use your California driver license) If your current name no longer matches the name on your birth date/legal presence document, see "True Full Name" and "How to Change Your Name" for more information.
Pay the application fee for a 5-year license
Pass a vision exam
Submit a completed Medical Examination Report form DL 51.
Effective October 1, 2004, DMV will accept only a Medical Examination Report (DL 51) with a revision date of 2/2004 or later, or a current medical form (containing the new blood pressure guidelines) approved by the Federal Highway Administration or the Federal Aviation Administration.
Pass the traffic laws and sign tests for the class of vehicle you will drive. You have three chances to pass the test."
So according to this I should not need it -
I also read the TSA Hazmat requirements on their site which states my CA DL and SS card is sufficient for that which is required by the carrier that is sending me to trucking school. So other than them wanting it for people who are not CA state resident or do not hold a CA DL/ID I do not see why I would need it. Any other thoughts anyone?

Although it has been so many years for me, all I can say is that the birth certificate is proof that you are an American citizen. Too bad you DIDN'T READ EVERYTHING LONG AGO, instead like recently, when your time ran out.
You may have to cancel your schooling, until you can go IN PERSON to your state records dept and get a certified copy of your birth certificate.
What I fear, is that IF YOU GO, you will be sent back home, ON YOUR DIME till you get this done.
I don't know what else to tell you at this point. Being FULLY prepared long ago, instead of not having ALL that you needed RIGHT NOW, isn't going to go far with you when you arrive at school. You may not even have time to unpack your bags.
Just because the TSA say's a driver's license and an SS are all that is required to get a TWIC card, DOES NOT MEAN that a company cannot require a birth certificate. What YOU NEED TO KNOW, is that non-truckers can get a TWIC card as well, like dock workers, and security guards for instance. (I know, I applied for a security job a few months ago, and I already had a TWIC card *as a driver*)
I wish you well in your future. But if you continue to NOT HAVE your ducks in a row now, then as a driver, you may have a problem with your company as well, like being late, getting lost, etc, etc. All of which can lead to you being fired. -
You will most likely need it,
good luck. -
I believe the federal government has established that ANYONE that wants to maintain their hazmat endorsement OR get a hazmat endorsement must present their original birth certificate along with other proof of identity, pass a knowledge test, and submit to a criminal fingerprint check before they will be approved for a hazmat endorsement.
It sounds like the school wants to prepare you for getting every possible endorsement to aid you in the process of finding employment. -
You may be able to purchase it online, and have it shipped ASAP,
check into it.
