Yes, I drove refer 48 States. After a year I started taking trainees on the truck and worked with them on company policies and procedures and general assistance on how to split the gears on the 13 speed transmissions May equips their trucks with. I did that to increase my income, plus it helped to keep me rolling in the miles generally.
My experience there set me up with the experience of route planning, time management and how these companies operate logistically. I kept my nose and record clean, both driving and CSA scoring and it became very easy for me to be picky about where I wanted to work regionally in my neck of the woods on the west coast.
I only drive the I-5 corridor now. I start my work week with a load of lumber for SoCal and come back up to WA with beer or wine. No more refer pulls. I'm home every weekend, my pay has increased by 30% sine I started driving. Benefits are much better and I get home every weekend now. Usually home Friday late afternoon, home all day Saturday and leave Sunday late morning.
The bigger companies micro-manage their drivers, the smaller 50 company trucks outfit I work for now never bothers meIt takes patience and realistic expectations to get to this point in the industry. So, just be patient and pay your dues and the options will expand exponentially after a couple of years.
JackTheWhack Thanks this. -

I know it was already stated but I would look into Roehl. They have a terminal in Phx. Lots of flatbed freight coming out of there when I worked there in 2011.

Do yourself a favor and remove the words "good" and "starter company" from the same sentence. There is no such thing.

JBS Carriers in Tolleson and headquartered in Greeley Colorado may hire you and train you. Reefer with a lot of new equipment but still nearly virgins as to the transport side. Call Jeff in Greeley office.

System Transport is a good company. Terminal in Phoenix. They hire new CDL grads. Regional or 48 or 48 + Alaska. The company has reefer/flatbed/tanker. Trucks have APU's. Two websites:systemtrans and trans-system
Watkins & Shepard - Phoenix terminal
Melton Truck Lines - APU equipped
Interstate Distributor - Phoenix yard facilityLast edited: Jan 10, 2013
