Really good price for insurance??? :biggrin_2554:

Remember they are insuring me to drive 40 tons down the road without ever having DONE it! lol... I was hoping it would go WAY down next year. Yes, it is for end dump, but the coverage is only 500 miles, so that may be why. Also includes 75,000 cargo and 100k uninsured/underinsured motorist, damage, and of course the liability.

I don't have any other updates for you, but please feel free to follow the "instant O/O and loadboards" thread I have going. I will keep it honest, for better or worse.

Glad you seem to like them too, I'll take that as another endorsement from someone who knows the business!

If I was in the market for a truck to pull an end dump, I'd also look for a truck with full locking rears, they make a huge difference. I'd also look for a 18 speed, to help offroad(an 15 or 8LL would work too, but they aren't nearly as nice on the highway) Personaly I think MI spec tractor would really be ideal, but you would pay a bit of a weight penalty..

I spent last fall, and part of the winter hauling tire shred in a 36 foot end dump, and it can get really scary when it freezes in the trailer, you get it all the way up, and NOTHING comes out... The biggest things I've found so far is to really watch where you dump, raise the lift axles on the trailer(Mine had a pusher), and dump the air on the truck.. that, and watch the trailer in the mirror when it goes up..

    PharmPhail Thanks this.

I think you're just the guy I wanted to talk to. I see you live in Mi. and I was wondering how this type of trucking is doing in this area of the country.
Is there a need for end dumps or hoppers running in or out of MI. and if so where would a guy get a start.
I wish I had the confidence that PharmPhail has but our economy here in Mi. sucks so bad it causes me to wonder if a guy can make it here.
    Any info would be appreciated.

I wish I could help you more, but I live at the opposite end of the state as you, I'm all the way up in the top of the UP. So I'm really not too terribly sure on whats going on down at your end of the state, especially stuff going across state lines. End dumps up here are 99% 8 gravel trains, and they seem to only be hauling 3 things, gravel(seasonal), salt(seasonal) and coal(slowing down)

However, I do know that there is a bit of grain/seed/feed still moving(again, probably seasonal) in the LP, but I'm really not sure who would be the best contacts for that sort of work.

Also, the kind of equipment one needs will vary depending on if your staying in MI(grossing 164K possibly) or interstate(80K)

Remember, my gig is OTR! It's mostly eastern U.S., but it is not overly concerned with the economy of any one given state. We go where the work is, that is the comfort zone.

Yeah but it would be nice to know if a guy would be able to get a load taking him back home once in a while.
I've seen alot of end dumps here in the past hauling coke into the steel mill. But the smaller companies that were doing that have their trucks parked and some have for sale signs in them.
I would be more interested in the hopper side of it, but I can't remember ever seeing a hopper trailer in this area. Again I'm just thinking of loads taking me out and back in to Michigan, once I'm out it really wouldn't be a problem until it was time to go home.
