the last post was dead on, you can easily obtain your cdl license with ease as in study the hand book and take the test along with what ever endorsements you wish to have, renting the truck to accomplish this as well. in Texas, you can take the test until you pass basically. the problem is the experience you list on the job application since the company will verify previous employment. as for getting on with a company right away, it would be my guess that you would have an easier time if you were enrolled with a tech school, mine was three weeks long and i paid $4500 on a credit card. as for making decent money, it would be to go with the oil field and be willing to relocate when the demand for the source moves you to a new location or the food service industry. i was making $80,000 a year before i left. i was there nine years and had senority that allowed me to make good money, i left because i got screwed and was not about to let them up my back side again, says alot about a company who has an employee willing to leave within the last 14months in this economy, this was MBM by the way. another thing is, you have the option to have a company train you and they will pay for everything, but that is usually a two year obligation which I would not recommend unless you are free to travel with no one back home hounding you to spend some time at home. Swift Transportation had a deal that you would be with a driver trainer for about 8 weeks and then they turned you loose in your own truck but again that was 10 plus years ago. I wish you well, btw, I got my AA degree in business management with every intention to step into a management position (after 20 years in the Navy) at MBM, two weeks after I got it, they hired someone from the outside who only lasted 5 days and they knew #### well I was in the process to get my decree, they did this without even posting the job internally. So i left and became an owner operator, not a recommended move for the beginner, my military retirement has helped me through up to now. i just bought my second truck and allowed someone to take over payments on my first. MY BIGGEST OR BEST ADVICE is to check out the company you plan on getting hired at, there is a high turn over rate for a reason. I am at my third company since I left MBM and I should be here for until "the end of this system of things". I surely was not wanting to be one of those drivers who went from company to company and that is exactly what happened. Finally, I hope the best for you...
