trying to get a handle on operating cost per mile... my son thinks owning a truck (stress on owning a truck) would be a good side venture...looking at coming out of retirement and driving his first one... but need to get real life numbers.. not over inflated ego numbers ... he knows it is a penny business.. any help i can get will be appreciated. thanks (maybe a list of expenses in case i forgot some thing in mine)

I'm right around $1.35-$1.60/mi month to month depending on repairs and deadhead. Keep in mind fuel economy is going to be lower pulling any sort of open deck. I'm still dreaming of the day I see 6mpg.

Mine runs a 1.30 a mile. Keep in mind I do all my own repair, I own an independent diesel repair shop have guys hired to run it and support this trucking habit lol. Seriously, I do pay myself drivers wages but I never figure my time on repair unless I make a ticket and run it through the shop which is very rare.

I think you need to know if the numbers include driver wages and expenses. Or just the truck costs. Driver wages and expenses will vary a lot IMO.

Just to turn the key and start moving costs $1.35 per mile for me. That's just the truck, before my salary, a cheeseburger on the road or anything. That neighborhood is a good guesstimate to start from.
