Greeting folks. I wanted to stop by here and ask for some help. I recently graduated from CDL school (which I paid for myself). I live in NC and I’m looking for my first job. I quickly realized that not many options are available to new driver mostly due to insurance constraints. I have had two offers, one from Swift and one from Roehl. The two things I keep hearing is Swift has terrible home-time and Roehl doesn’t have the miles but I just don’t know what to believe out there! I am a hard worker and I am a good employee. I value being on time and not being a whiner so I hope to find a company that will give me the loads because I don’t see the value in being away from home if you’re not making money. Home-time is also important and Roehl seems to be pretty good in that aspect but I am here to ask your folks for insight. In your opinion who is the better company to get a start in the industry or would you recommend a different company all together? I’m looking for local, regional or dedicated no touch freight. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely go with Roehl between the two, especially if you already have a CDL there is no question. Roehl's training is exceptionally good and upon completing your training there are an abundance of different opportunities that you can explore within the company that will hopefully suit your needs for as long as you work for the company. In all likelihood they will probably want to start you doing reefer work but the fleet to get into with them is flatbed and if you can do that from the start it is an opportunity that would pay dividends in the future in so many ways. Even if you must do reefer for your training period just suck it up and move on as soon as you can into another division when your initial training is done.

The best jobs to get into with Roehl are the Lowe's fleet doing Dry Van, curtainside fleet if doing flatbed, and if you have the willingness to do RGN that is another excellent opportunity within the flatbed division.

Roehl also offers several hometime options.

But which options are available for each fleet....you would have to inquire within about.

Does Swift have terrible home time?

I get home around once a month. Every 5 weeks or so.
And that is my choice, my own schedule.

A week or so after I come back from home time my DM is asking why I don't have a home time request in yet.
Well, I just got back from home time and I'll let you know a couple weeks before I want it.
Because many of the drivers at my terminal go home every week or two, and that is what they are used to.

I don't always get home on the day I requested, but mostly I do.
Last month they got me about 300 miles from home and had me deadhead from there because the loads were not there.

Sometimes I have to be firm in refusing loads that won't get me closer to home, but most times they really try to get me home on my requested date.

13+ years at Swift and never a good reason to leave, so...
