Can someone explain the mechanics of downshifting when floating? I get the part of getting rpms down by letting off fuel and or braking generally to around 1000-1100 before downshifting...Talking here about a eaton fuller ten speed transmission. Thanks.
Need some advice Please

You downshift floating the same as you do using the clutch. You either slow down because of the terrain, lack of fuel, or braking. When your rpm get low enough let foot off the fuel pedal, DEPRESS CLUTCH and take out of gear at same time, raise your rpm 3 or 400, DEPRESS CLUTCH (not to the floor) and slip it into gear.
When you get good shifting with the clutch then worry about floating, saves wear and tear on the equipment. Some engine/tranny combo's are hard to get in and out of gear without using the clutch unless your timing is exact. Mosts trucks once you get to learn them will be smooth as butter, but there is always the occasional odd ball out there. -
