Ok, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have a class 'B' CDL and want to upgrade to an 'A'. I am looking to go to a company sponsored school. But, I have a problem. I have been a stay at home mom for the majority of the last 7 years and I have no recent work history. My driving record and criminal background is spotless. I have been turned down by Werner, P.A.M., and USA because I have not been employed recently. It's as if these places look down on me because I chose to stay home with my children while my husband worked. Prior to staying home I was a bus driver with a spotless driving record and good employment history. Swift has given me the ok to train at their school and become a driver for them. But, my husband used to drive for Swift and I would rather not go there if at all possible. My question is, are there any companies out there that will hire me with out a recent work history? I am getting frustrated with these places that won't hire me because I've been a stay at home mom. My husband is leaving his job in 2 1/2 months to have surgery then go to school. I will be the only one employed then, so I need to find something. Like I said, I can go to Swift and I will if it comes down to it. But, I would rather find another company to work for. My husbands experience with Swift wasn't all that great. I'm hoping someone out there knows of other companies that might hire me.
Need some advice...please!

You can try CRST--they may help you out. I would call around some of the company's that take students and ask them .
-
CRST will most likely take you if you get statements from 2 people outside your hosehold to state you were a stay at home mom, and you get them notorized. But honestly there isnt much diff compared to Swift. Between the two the only real choice is which color truck you want to drive.

Welcome to the trucking industry! I've been trying to get in for the past 2 year's but all my loan's and grants have been denied from the government, school's and bank's. I would have been able to get in with Swift or C.R. England but I didn't have enough "verifiable" work history. Now considering I've been trying to get in for 2 year's meaning I started when I hit 21 because it just run's in my blood. However a majority of companies have the requirements and either 21 year's of age up to 23 year's of age with 10 year's "verifiable" work history. Who in the hell at 21 to 23 year's old is going to have 10 year's of "verifiable" work history when 3-4 year's prior of getting out of high school. Catch 22. I saw a couple of other companies that stated you had to be 23 with like 7 to 10 year's OTR to get on with them. You can't get a class A CDL under the age of 21. I'm trying to figure out what kinda drug's these people are on to come up with this stupid ****. It's really hard to get in.
However to me, I think it's BS that they won't take you because you are a stay at home mom. It sound's like a type of discrimination to me because your only human and kid's are kid's. They can't take care of themselve's. Now, I can understand going back 10 year's on a criminal record but work history? Without $4,900 in hand I can't go to school and that still doesn't garentee you a job because of the lack of work history even though it allow's you to obtain your CDL. I'm protesting the hell out of this subject.

I applied through Prime and just spoke with someone there yesterday. The lady was just down right rude to me. She flat out said "What's hurting you is that you've been at home all this time with no recent work history. No one is going to hire you." I told her it's not like I was just being lazy and not wanting to work, I chose to stay home with my kids while my husband worked. She came back with, "I have kids and I work." That really bothered me when she said that. I just told her, "Staying home was my choice and alot of Moms choose to do just that." Then I hung up. Looks like I might be going with Swift even if I didn't want too. And, I'm waiting to hear back from CRST and C.R. England. I have already spoke with someone at all three companies. Swift has already given me the o.k. and the other 2 said my work history shouldn't be a problem. None of the better companies that I prefer to work for will hire me. And I WAS really interested in Prime even if maybe for a couple of years down the road, but that lady and her attitude has kind of turned me away from them. I'll just have to go with a crappier company than what I wanted for a couple of years to get the 'work history' then move on to something better.

Have you tried schnieder ?

Call Watkins Shepard. They will ask for a notorized statement detailing why you were unemployed. Give them a call. After their 30 day training you go solo; no trainer.

-
I agree call Schneider. They have a huge terminal in Carlisle Pa and do have their own school for "newbies" but they will require you to sign a contract and agree to work there for 2 years after they train you. But at least they do not charge you for the training first like the other trucking schools.

I wouldn't go with Prime. My last time out on the road was when we ran a load up to Montana and then brought the truck back to the yard to turn it in. There was a big issue as this is a Lease to own/ O/O company. After my step dad had leased a Freightliner FLD 120 from them running reffer division some how he ended up owning the company $75.00 after they took his check for fuel, tire's, maint., oil, permits, insurance, etc and ended up owing them. I thought that was a crock of s***. On the way back to Springfield, MO. We hadn't even made it out of Montana we had to pull over going down hill in -16 degree weather because the engine completely shut itself down from over heating. Tell me. What's wrong with that picture? Anyway we sat on the side of the interstate for two and a half hours trying to get the motor cooled down so we could get back under way. My step dad and I both checked the coolant when we stopped and before we cranked back up and it was fine. He had been complaining about the truck sense he got it that it didn't pull uphill worth a #### and that he was leasing to own it wasn't worth it so we made it to the yard, pulled in the shop got the last of our thing's threw them the key's and told them they could have the POS and to hell with owing the company money instead of making a pay check and we walked right out the front gate with our ride waiting on us to come back home.
I don't see how Prime driver's make it. Especially the one's who spend more time at home than they do on the road because I see a few of them who park around here and their trucks sit for a couple of week's at a time and they are gone no longer than a week as to where my step dad spent almost 2 solid months out without coming home trying to keep up the payments on a ragged out POS and these other guy's had brand new trucks.
Bella, if I was in your shoe's I'd jump on anything I can get as I am in the same predicament your in. That's why I'm going to try for P.A.M. sense they only require 3 1/2 year's work history. If that fail's then I'm slap clueless as to what else I can do to get my foot in the door because there is not a single soul I can turn to, to ask for a loan to go to school and invest every dime other than $100 of every paycheck starting with the very first one to get it paid off ASAP. I know how to bargan and eat in the truck. I can make it on $75 a week for food because I don't mind sandwich's and roman noodles in a cup. I've done it before to conserve on spending eatting in those expensive truck stops and buying thing's that aren't needed. -
if you want to talk to someone at prime, call them and ask for stephanie young ... she is who i was talking to the last few weeks .... she will let you know what you will need.. tell her tony in pa gave you her number ....
