I'd go with UPS for stability... Everyone talks about "Your Just A Number" at BIG companies and Mom and Pop shops that it's more personal.... Who cares if your just a number at the other company.. As long as your treated fairly at the company then who cares if your name is Jim or 1234... I don't get paid for people to know my name, I get paid to work... I'd rather have stability, steady income, pension etc... and be called 1234 rather then no stability, pension, or bennies and be called Jim...
Besides all the people around you know you by name.. Your bosses will know you by name... Just the office workers at head officer won't know you.. Who cares if they know you or not.. As long as you get a pay check at the end of the week that's what matters... And with todays economy I'd definitely take stability... UPS is a well running established company with many assets and customers... What does the Mom and Pop shops have...??
Need some advice - work for Mom n Pop or UPS Freight?

i can't imagine you'd be getting a vacation during the holidays either. freight delivers year round. and i'd think xmas would be the busiest time of year.
Big Don Thanks this. -
Well, I don't know about the freight side, but on the package car side of things where I worked, nobody was allowed vacation from about the middle of november until after christmas.

UPS would be a better opportunity. Who cares if HR knows you by a number instead of a name? UPS checks will clear the bank, and that should be all that matters.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Take the ups job.Mom and pop companies pay starter company wage.I was making 29 cpm to drive an unsafe trk and bad trls.Company said its safe but I knew better as to why im no longer with that company.Im at a much better company now.Who cares if usp treats you like a number as long as they pay well thats all that matters.Knowing drivers on a personal level does not pay the bills.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
it all depends on what you want..do you want to be called by your name treated pretty good (prob) have a little flexability on your schedule and prob have subpar bennies ..or be known by a number have little to no control of your schedule and have descent bennies and a little better money?...I did the mom and pop deal back in late 80's 2 of the 3 treated me like royalty I loved it and made very little money...but I could survive on what I was making as I had just got married no kids ,old pickup, housetrailer very few bills...well now could I do it for one of these jobs? maybe but I wouldnt like it..now have kids, grandkids, mortgage, newer pickup, kubota, trackhoe. etc....do I regret working for mom and pop co.'s?..heck no I loved it but that was then now i need money and bennies back then I didnt...what do you need?

As has allready been said it comes down to what you are looking for in a company. I pride myself on working hard, making my deadlines and I don't mind doing extra work when asked. All I ask in return is being kept busy and my checks don't bounce. I've worked for "mom and pops" and for major carriers. I prefer "mom and pops" when I have a problem I can pick up the phone and speak directly to the owner and things get done. I am also essentially allowed to do whatever I want as long as loads aren't late and equipment is taken care of. In my opinion with a major carrier you get lost in the shuffle. You might be an exemplary driver but they don't care or notice, there are just too many waiting in the wings for it to matter to them untill you #### up. I now work for a major carrier but it is an off shoot and is managed like a "mom and pop" in my opinion I have the best of both worlds. I don't know the first thing about UPS but I would not work for them if I had something in the bag that paid as well with near the same benefits.

I work for a large employer and don't experience anything remotely close to what you're saying.

I like being a number. I was with a big carrier for 18 years . I said hello to the company president once. And waved at a vice president once in the parking lot. I didn't need to know them. They didn't need to know me. When I got empty, I sent my empty msg. And a few minutes later I would get info on next load. I hauled the freight and every week money would get deposited in my account. Had a qcomm so I didn't need to make check calls. I don't mean to sound anti social. But I wanna do my job and be left alone as far as the company is concerned. And when you can no longer do the job , you will be of no value to them. It's just business.
