Hey everyone, im looking for some advice to help me get into trucking. ive done everything right so far, atleast in my head. i went to a reputable school. got my class A license, with several endorsements (HazMat included.)I also have my Passport card, and can get the TWIC if needed. the only thing holding me back is my lack of experience, and a slight hiccup in my past, going back about 2 years ago. the issue in the past is truly whats holding me back. to be forthcoming and try and get the advise i need, heres what i did. back in 09, i was in the army, got a bit depressed, lost self controll and used marijuana, got caught, and was discharged early 2010 with a general under honorable discharge. i really want to be a driver, and have put forth alot of effort and money into this already. and, while i may not be the best judge of this, i feel like im a #### good driver. im very aware, and i understand the truck, and trucking industry very well. my school marks were always above 90, only like 2 of them were 85s. all i need is an oppurtunity. where can i find this at?

What companies have you applied to? Sorry to hear about your problem man, I appreciate your service to our country, maybe not the best way to get out of the service though but it's in the past. Was a failed drug screen marked on your record? Because if so.... from what I've read, your pretty much boned until that falls off. Just to let you know so you don't get to mad when people start talking mad junk to you. Some drivers on these forums will bash you for drug usage. I don't approve of drugs, but I'm not going to bash you about it because you went through all the aftermath of getting caught.. Lesson learned the hard way are a bi**h but some times they are a eye opener. And depression sucks, But it really sounds like your trying to get back on track and that is one thing I can appreciate in people. Don't give up. You put forth the effort in doing this, follow it through. If big companies wont take you, look at small fleets. Or even run for food vendors (back breaking work) but some take on new drivers.

Preciate the response, ya i really regret what happened in the service for me, but as you said, the past is the past. and ive got no reserves about where i work/who i work for, ive applied to every trucking name ive seen on the internet, and called every phone number i could find. but im far from giving up. as for some people trying to bash on me, they can, but it wont do em much good. is there somewhere i could find lists or small companies, im ready to go pound some pavement, just unsure of where to start.

Was this a dishonorable discharge? Or honorable? (Alittle tired and your post isn't clicking in my head for some reason). Also, are you disclosing you've failed a drug test or the companies finding out you did? Any general response from them for turning you down?

my discharge is characterized as a General Under Honorable Conditions discharge. and im disclosing it, cause its written on my DD-214, so im not trying to waste my time or theirs.

not sure of your financial situation, but have you ever thought about going the owner operator route ??
sadly,it seems the insurance companies dictate who could work for a company today.

I don't see,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, were what happened in the military would have anything to do with any standard class A driving job. But I do not know anything about how the military works especially any discharges. Maybe someone else has some insight.

i dont have the financial backing to become an O/O. nor do i want to make my first jump into the trucking world running a company, i dont want to have to worry about permits and fuel taxes and interstate licensing. i just simply want to get my feet wet and test the waters, before i go diving into a 5 mile deep lake thats half frozen :)
