Hey everyone. I´d like to get your opinion on what I should do.
I got my cdl about 6 months ago and started working in the oilfield here in southwest PA. Things have really slowed down and I can´t find a company that has steady work.
I have a family and wanted to stay close to home but at this point I can either see them everyday and not pay our bills, or I can go OTR.
I´m close enough to Pittsburgh, New Stanton, and Washington, PA that eventually working linehaul for a company like Pitt Ohio or Dayton might give me the opportunity to provide for my family and be home more often, but I only have 6 months experience of driving Class B water bottles. So I think the smartest thing I can do right now is put my time in OTR and get the experience I need.
What would you guys do in my situation? I´m gonna apply with Melton. Any other companies you know of in my area, or any other advice would be appreciated. Thank you much.
Need some advice

Show up with a resume at every terminal you can find. Someone might need a body and like your professional smile. UPS has a terminal in New Stanton. If you can find LTL work you'll be home nights.
Jonkie Thanks this. -
I agree , you can sell yourself in person over the resume

Thanks fellas.
I tried UPS but they wanted a year of tractor trailer experience. YRC has a terminal not too far from me and I went through their application on the website. It said I was being considered. Do you think I should try going there in person with a resume?8thnote Thanks this. -
Knock on every freight terminal's door and how about grocery warehouses?

@Pennsylvania_Dutch - check out Coca-Cola in Houston, PA. You'll definitely have physical labor involved, but they train Class A drivers, that's where I started in 1991.
Old Dominion has a terminal in Eighty Four, they may offer some kind of training program, I'm not sure.
Lipari Foods has a drop yard in New Stanton, they have a couple of Class B trucks, not sure if they train or not.
Waste Management has a facility in Washington, may not be an ideal job, but it would be steady home every day work. I think the roll off side is a decent gig.
Nappies Foodservice in Imperial has a crap load of Class B trucks, they're always looking for drivers and offer a 4 day a week schedule.
Paragon Food Service in Cranberry is looking for Class B guys, I bet they would also train you for a Class A if you prove yourself.
I'll try to think of some other places also.Diggler Thanks this. -

@Pennsylvania_Dutch Schneider in Wintersville, Ohio will train you on their Wal Mart account. Forgot about them, not sure how far away you are from Ohio.
