Hello to all. A bit about myself. Studying for my CLP now in NJ. Have been researching different CDL paid training schools. Have been turned down by Jim Palmer/Roehl so far. My search continues.

Here's my issue-I have a felony conviction for robbery from 1997. Did 11 years 2 months. I have been home since 2009. In the past 8 years I have a spotless drivers license and a stable 8 year work history. If only for dead end job after dead end job. Good references to.

I have wanted to drive OTR for some time now but really needed to make a good decision about this. Due to monetary concerns, I would need paid CDL training and be on the hook with a company for awhile. Suits me just fine. I'm ready to put the work in. I will get this done. If anyone here has any advice as to a CDL training school that would give a convicted felon a chance, I'm all ears.

    Thanks.

Are you still on parole? Usually some companies don't go back further than 7-10 years. I believe the problem you may run into is the 10 year history. You might have to hustle up on your own if you really want to do this & pay for school yourself. If this is your dream be patient and wait that time off. I would apply everywhere that offers company cdl training. If that doesn't open up for you. You then know the route you have to take. Do not give up it may just take a little more time for the door to open. I hope all goes well

Not on parole at all. I'm free and clear of all trouble. My conviction date is December 1997. Almost 20 years ago. Was released in 2009.

I think @Chinatown advice here is the best. Go online and do as many applications as you can. Then take the calls one call at a time and I am sure somebody will make you a job offer.

Check with your unemployment office. They may have a program that will pay for school. That's how I got my CDL. Lots of hoops to jump thru but I got it done.

Companies might be looking at 10 years FROM YOUR RELEASE DATE.
Robbery is a SERIOUS conviction in this industry....because you need to be trusted with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and freight.

You paid your debt...but now you gotta earn your trust---try in 2019 when your release date is 10 years old...bet you get better results (as long as you keep your nose clean).

P.S.- No I'm not judging...just giving you a piece of how THEY may be viewing things.
