My husband has 2 trucks, he drives one and we have a driver for the other one. And I would like to think that we were being fair to him. We were paying him .41 cents a mile , and paying for his insurance(life, health and dental) which came up to 263.07 a week. We still pay for the fuel and maintnence and everything. Well our driver has a case of the butt because his pay was only 757.00 for 2700 miles that is minus his advances, which he thought we should pay him for as well. This guy has only 1 year and 10 months experience driving has had 2 chargeable accidents(before he was with us) and pulled the airlines out of the truck twice. I don't think that he was being treated unfair. He thinks that he should be making more per mile. I guess what I am trying to ask is, if you were a new driver do you think that is a reasonable rate??

    Thanks
    Sally

That sounds like a pretty good deal he is just to stupid to realize it....:biggrin_2552:

Kick his butt to the curb and find someone else. If he thinks he should get all miles paid plus the advances he pulls he isn't very bright!

Some people get in to much of a hurry when unhooking and just forget. It happens to everyone.

Next thing you know, he will forget to lower the support legs and drop the trailer on the ground. If you keep a written record of the mistakes he makes, perhaps you can go through a sequence of punishments leading to termination. Start by making him pay for his repairs. He will probably quit without paying for his last, biggest mistake.

He sounds like a guy who is looking for something for nothing and he probably voted for Obama. Be sure to document all of his mistakes and get him to sign a letter for each one. Then when he takes you to the labor board for firing him you will have documentation of your reasons for firing him. Be sure you pay the unemployment because he will be after that too. You will either be forced to fire him or he will be "injured" on the job and he will be suing you. Also take care to pay the social security so when he is claiming disability you are covered there.

If all of these things are presently in order I suggest you find a replacement that has a family to feed and excellent references. He probably voted for Mc Cain. With what you are paying or maybe a penny or two more and the benefits you have you will get a top shelf driver. Quality doesn't cost, it pays.

Sounds like a good deal for a GOOD, EXPERIENCED driver. Sounds like too much for what you are getting.

If someone offered this young 18 year old with no experience a gig like that I would jump at it and won't complain. Netting dang near $800 a week with insurance paid for by the company, yeah I would not complain at all! I would do everything my power to keep that gig and make the owners not regret the decision.

I as a fellow fleet owner feel like you are seriously overpaying in the current marketplace. Not very many places are paying even close to that right now. The supply/demand curve is slanted in the favor of the employer, and I would take advantage of that were it me.

Not only would I fire this clown on the basis of pure incompetence, I would pay the next guy that I hire about 5-7 cents less per mile(based on experience). With the fact that you are paying benefits and assuming that you are withholding taxes properly(not paying on a 1099), that pay level would be very competitive in the current marketplace.
