Hey there, looking to be an o/o doing oil field work... Just found 03' W900L 558k miles with c-15 6nz 10 speed for 29k. Seems like a decent deal from a reputable dealer but who knows, I'm terrified of needing an o/h within a month.... start up costs are painful! Truck is former reefer hauler from local fleet that I know maintains after each haul.... still scared. Any advise?? Thanks :)

Any service records? Ask for contact info of the last owner and call them. Get a 90 day warranty, have your mechanic look at it. If they stone wall you on the warranty or last owners, run away.

Oil analysis? $50~ for some peace of mind...

That's not going to check the injectors or the $2500 cab heater box though

Thanks everyone.... I appreciate the advise! I do love those CATs but they are so expensive... makes me nervous to buy one on my first go around.

Cat parts do have the potential of being expensive if you just go in and buy them list price over the counter at Cat. If you buy them through your truck dealer, you generally get a better price. That 6nz is probably one of the best truck engines ever built-yeah, it might need an inframe next week, but so might anything else you buy. I pay $14, IIRC, for oil analysis, but that won't tell you much if the oil's just been changed.

Having said that, that price sounds a little high to me for a ten speed truck.

    1. Ask for any maintenance records. Check with the previous owner. 2. Get an oil analysis. 3. What does your gut say? Is this the truck you want to be in or not? Buying used is a risky deal no matter what. I have never owned a new truck always bought used and had my problems but was willing to take the chance. 29k sounds a little high to me to for an 03. Ask the dealer if any warranties are available on the truck. Probably not, but all they can say is no. Check out Truck Paper for some 03 W9's. See what kinda prices other dealers are asking for a similar truck. You just might stumble on a better deal.Check out all 03"s ie pete, freightliner, cornfield cadillacs, etc. You can't do too much research. Get your ducks in a row and go get'um!! Best of luck to you.

If the truck is in good shape, I'd get an oil analysis and if it comes back ok, shoot them 25k. Thar 6NZ is THE cat engine to have. Hands down.

10 speed is the last thing i'd want in the patch. you need low gears. a low 15 or an 18 IMO

I hear ya.... I ran this same set up minus the sleeper and it did fine but I was really looking for at least a 13. Funny thing is, trucks seem really hard to come by right now, I have been on the hunt for almost a month and have had a heck of time. Let alone tankers, geez that's a joke. You think even with the low miles it's high? We came to $32 for all new tires, dyno, and some other little things needed... hope I'm not getting taken!
