Hi, I have a regional co. That is letting me move trailers around their lot and will drive with me on the road. They have no formal training program but are in need of drivers so they will do this for me(my mother knows the CEO and he is making this happen). So my time in the truck is limited per week b/c I need to keep working my current job. but I need to be ready for my drivers exam as soon as poss. Any tips or advice on specific maneuvers or things I should be doing on the road to prepare myself for the exam? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Your state should have a manual showing the skills needed for the test...practice those. Research the place you are going to take your test...call them. To get the best advice here put where you live in your profile. Someone might be able to give you more specific information that way.

Every state is a bit different on what they test. You definitely want to practice straight line backing and turning tighter corners. Also, get your state's CDL manual like 77smartin said and learn the brake test inside and out. Some states, like Texas where I'm from, also test you on parallel parking. Don't skimp on studying for the written tests either.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. I'm from Ohio. I'll get my profile updated later, I'm working now haha. My father inlaw is going through the same process right now but had money to quit his job and have more time in the truck so I'm tryin to get as much from him as poss. But I figured u guys would have more insight than him since he's just a newb too! Thanks again

You probably can get all the information that you will need one line from the ohio dmv

Wow, I live prolly within 5 miles of you.

This was how it went for me, at the Willard testing center..

Road test is easy. don't hit a curb, complete stops at stop signs, and they'll grill you on signs (they'll ask what the sign said that you just passed).

Yard Maneuvers are: offset backing; and then they'll either have you alley dock OR parallel park (one or the other, but not both, and you won't know which until they tell you)

pre-trip: you'll go thru that . I forget how many points, but they deduct points from anything you miss. This is EASY to fail if you don't practice it and do the way they want it. I saw a guy fail a class B when i was there, he just walked in and just thought he'd waltz on out with a class B. I saw a former class A driver fail it when he let his CDL go and wanted to get it back after a few years. You might try going to the testing center and see if they have a cheat sheet to learn from. I will see if I still have my cheat sheet, but I won't be home til Friday or Saturday.

    good luck!

And for the love of God, ut on your seat belt during the road test. My examiner in Texas told me that 1 out of every 5 people she tests never once put on their seatbelt, and it's an instant fail.

Thanks everyone. I feel like I'm pretty prepared as far as the pretrip goes, I was able to get a cheatsheat from a trainer up at tri-c. He said it's what the dmv uses. Plus I've had a few hours practicing it with my father in law. I'm more worried about the maneuvering and road test since I haven't had muc time in the tractor yet. But as I get more time I'm sure I'll feel better.

Great advice here...also learn the correct way to double clutch....most companies require that you know how, and most will fail you on a road test if you don't!

I heard that also. In fact as a rule, as soon as you get in the truck, buckle up. Some people get in the truck to do the air brake portion of the test and fail because they didn't put there seat belt on prior to doing the in cab air brake test.
