Anybody out there help me with finding a set of frame rails for a 2000 T800 Kenworth. I belong to a fire company in western PA and we purchased the truck brand new in 2001 off a fire truck manufacturer that had it for another fire company but that company backed out. It sat for 2 years in storage till we could purchase the fire body and pump for on the back. We love the truck and do not want to get rid of it at all. It has an N14 cummins and till only has about 14,000 miles.
The problem is the frame is rusting from under the truck. We found out that the metal made for the frames in 99 00 and 01 trucks came out of China and however they made it, when it meets salt from the PA winters it rusts horribly. We have talked to other truckers from around the area who had the same issues but have since moved on to other trucks. Our problem is to replace this truck as it sits with a new one would be 300,000 plus dollars. Which we dont have. This truck was to last us 20 plus years and now were looking at it being out of service if nothing is done in less than 2.
The truck has double frame rails which i know is more apt to rust since moisture and everything else gets between them but this rust issue with us is ridiculous and for only 14,000 miles on the truck should have never happened.
Anybody out there with similar experiences, help or know where to look, for a small volunteer fire department.
