Im sorry.
I am the one who is in that bus back in 1983. I should have kept quiet. -
Been reading this and fascinated. I foolishly joined up in Uncle Sams Army in May 1958. Would have to dig the old DD form out for exact date. But... Did the 6 weeks basic at Ft Chaffee, AR and then shipped to Ft Devens Mass for a year of classified training. Between arriving and school classes starting, I was to
get military drivers license. So they put us in an old deuce and a half to teach / test.
It had a cast iron column up out of the floor with a short curved left shift lever sticking up. Nice cast ball.
There was F(go) and R(back) , and the best I remember two others (like 1 and 2). It jerked and clunked
and we drove around the brushy rocky base perimeter road. Sarge instructor said it was an Allison Automatic Transmisson, blah nomenclature model ?,OD in color.
I had been driving a nice old IH, L190, 5 spd/2 spd axle and was not too impressed.
But theywere there inKANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
Allison Transmission - Wikipedia
Here is some wiki reading for you guys but looks like January 1971 was the first year for on road vehicles. @KANSAS TRANSIT sounds like the ally is the way to go for you. I beat the crap out of a 5sp behind a 300hp 8.3L ISC cummins in a T300 3 axle fuel truck for 4 years in downtown Seattle everyday and I up around 50,000 gross every morning at the start of the day. Never one lick of trouble out of it. There is a glider kit company here on the west coast that’s building some T800 with Allison 4700’s behind 2ws cats and they have an 1850ft lb rating so I wouldn’t hesitate running the auto one bit.Last edited: Dec 29, 2019

Man does nobody remember shupe brothers in Colorado in the late 70s early 80s all they ran was Detroit’s with Allison automatic’s blue and white Kenworth trucks pulling grain trailers!!
I think it was his brother that owned tri-state commodities orange and white trucks mostly all Kenworth!!!bzinger, larry2903, KANSAS TRANSIT and 1 other person Thank this. -
