I've driven OTR for Schneider and mn89 inc a total of three years between the two. I took some time
out of the truck and worked in industrial maintenance for three years. Originally I obtained the cdl A at roadmaster years ago then after I got out of the business driving I did maintenance to find out driving paid much more and I missed working solo. So I did a refresher course at Carolina Trucking Academy then after I got the hazmat and tanker endorsements. I've applied at every fuel company around my area and propane delivery company still no luck landing the job. I found the hazmat test to be easy. What am I doing wrong? Should I consider going back OTR because I didn't drive consecutively? The jobs I've applied for I met the qualifications for so I'm not understanding the issue.
On top of everything else I cant get a response form any of the companies as to why I wasn't considered so I don't have a thing to go on as to what I need to improve to obtain the jobs I want in the future.
**Reliable finally hit me back and it's a insurance thing to were I'd have to of been driving for one year within the past three years. It's crazy because a small company told me that but he only had two dump trucks so I thought it was because he had a small business. You'd think me having done the refresher course at Carolina trucking academy I'd be in the clear. So yuppers I gotta go OTR because there's nothing hiring in Johnson county but back breaking cysco.
Need some questions answered.

The CDL job market is incredibly bad right now.
In short -- it is NOT a driver's job market.
Carriers can pretty much pick & choose from among the best & most qualified applicants.
Fuel delivery jobs....in particular....are very competitive, at present.
Your biggest problem in the current environment: you lack recent experience.
With fuel -- you are very likely competing against other drivers who already have fuel experience -- plus, they are already carded at the nearby fuel racks -- so once hired, they can hit the ground running.

Are you in North or South Carolina. Which city/town are you in or near.We don't need your address, just which city/town you're near or your zip code.

Before calling, submit the apps or short apps from each trucking company website. After a couple of days, call and say, "I'm checking on my driving job application."Last edited: Sep 22, 2025 at 8:39 PM

Most fuel/petroleum companies want at least 12 mos. recent OTR experience.
Either way, we'll find something suitable to get you started. -
