The permit book is part of the pretrip. Just how far the inspector digs into it is up to him. They often want the cab card, IFTA and insurance. Don't show up without a CDL driver in the passenger seat.
Have the trailer registration available. BG has been known to ask for a letter authorizing the permit only driver from whoever holds the authority. It's probably a given with some rental companies trucks since the rental company has the authorized drivers listed on the agreement. And Raun checks for driver experience and charges extra for low time drivers and tickets.

If you learned to drive in a truck, why can't you take the test in the same truck?

Why not have them let you use a truck to test with?

OK, here are some ball park figures on (if it were even allowable) to rent a tractor and trailer from a leasing company:

Daily rental for tractor 172.74, per day plus .19 per mile, - with a $5000 pre-approved credit line, and a business with 3 years financials.

the trailer 36.19 per day plus 0.04 per mile and a $500, deposit. The trailer can be rented without a pre-approved credit account.

So I added the mileage up at 40 miles.. just as a ballpark figure for running from the lease location to where it is that you plan on training for this day and I'll say 10 Gallons for the day for fuel.

Truck and trailer = $ 208.93 / Mileage $9.20 / Diesel appx $40.00 so about $250 dollars a day to train in and test in a truck that you have never even laid eyes on. Your chances of success in passing the skills test in this manner is frankly, not that high and as you'd have to get a CDL driver and or company with all the financial requirements, it just wouldn't work..

These are just estimates but the requirements are spot on..
