I have an offer from a small fleet (65 trucks) out of Fort Worth to haul sand to the fields between D/FW and Laredo. Pays 25%, benefits after 90 days, 3 weeks on / 4 days off. That's all I know.

Does this sound like a decent deal? I have 15+yrs experience in OTR and LTL, no tanker experience and no oil field experience. Does this sound like a good way to get my foot into the industry? I'm single, no kids, and want to get in so I can make some real money down the road.

I am in the process of trying to find a oil job to in Texas to ''get my feet in the door''. I have OTR experience about 75,000 miles but it was six years ago. The most recent 2 years have been as a marine technician where I used a semi with a very long trailer to haul out yachts for service a few times but no on the road driving. Hopefully my mechanical/electrical ability will help smooth things over with a company that might train me to be a driver again. I'm in Austin but currently have the financial means to figure out my sleeping arrangements if I have to go north, west, or south as there are still cheap rooms available in Texas. I'm single but I really don't want to go up to North Dakota just to get in a oil job. I don't know if I could handle -50 windchill. the last time I went to ND was to deliver a load of steel pipe in my OTR days about the same time of year and the wind was BAD cold like, you could feel it going through your skin to the bone...... also kind of a mars like countryside. I also see that there is no housing not even a couch in the corner up there for less than $1000 a month. I'm clean as bleach on all accords, driving and background, just got my hazmat and tanker endorsement. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience you'll find more opportunities for newbies in West Texas. Doesn't mean you won't get hired somewhere else, just that West Texas seems to be always be busier than everywhere else.

Yes, thanks I put in a application/resume with key as they are the only ones I saw that had a driver trainee position open. The position is for some one who does not even have a CDL but it seems there is no in between as far as it goes.

Plenty around here just depends on what you wanna do. Eagle one hotshot/FFE water and crude/Suncoast fuel and crude. There are a lot of places here that hire drivers with as little as 6 months experience and some right outta school. Most companies will even take you in with less experience than they want on there websites, when it gets busy......ITS BUSY NOW !!!!! LOL. Never hurts to come here, knock on some doors and and give it a try. Wish you luck

I talked with Stevens Tanker they have great equiptment CH Macks and new tankers, housing in a motel setup 2-3 minutes from the terminal. The night shift pays .50 more, with hazmat .50, night shift is 18.00 I think that,s a fair wage, they have blue cross insurance. They seem to be putting in a strong effort and have there act together , being upfront with details. I pretty much made my mind up, that I,m moving to Texas. The hard part is getting packed up, alot of my stuff is in a storage unit near the bay, where it,s about -50 with wind chill , ya have to be bare handed so it,s gonna take a while. So my question is are the tanker drivers busy south of San Antonio ? thanks in advance.
