Hey guys, we are about to buy a reefer trailer and need to know if it is worth what they are asking for it. They are asking $38,900 for a 2010 Great Dane trailer 53x102 with a Carrier reefer unit with around 10,000 hours. Here is the link.

Is that a ok price? I see them averaging around high 30s. What do you guys think? Thanks

I don't know much about reefers as I'm a dry box-er but I would say those hours are high, It looks like it was probably ran on a team truck and if it had an odometer it would say somewhere in the range of 750K on it, I am just guessing on all of this but that is my thoughts.

A 2010 trailer could have been produced in 2009 , so then it is 4 years old and 9500 hours works out to 2375 hours per year , also the reefer may have been used when put on the trailer.

Or used as "portable warehouses" at the packing plants...

You can probably find one with less hours for the same money. I think that is within a few grand of the going price though. People may call me crazy but I bet that same trailer or similar one is a few thousand cheaper in a few months. I'd hold off and buy in winter if you can.

I'd offer $33K and deal up to $35K.

See if you can find out what it was used for--and check engine hours versus run hour--Ive seen many newer used trailers with high engine--but low run hours--also--may be high(and 10k-isnt really high for 4 years) because of run on continuos--haulin produce--but used by ONE driver who took care of it and in good shape--so ask some more questions...
    Good Luck

Seems a tad high, but not into 'don't tough' territory. As said, find out what it was used for. If it was a lot of start-stop loads, then that's a lot of hours, and a lot of engine work. If it was running meat or produce on continuous for days at a time, then that's not that high.

We ended up with a 2006 Great Dane trailer with a rebuild reefer unit with brand new engine for $32,000; 2 year warranty on the engine from Thermo King. I feel i still got F'ed in the ### with no lube. What do you think?

We had to rush to get our diver on the road ASAP.

not a bad deal, but nothing to really brag about either.

New engines are about $4500 from what I have been told.

What did you get for a compressor on it? 2 or 3 port? 07 and 08 are the transition years if I remember correctly for the carrier units. I want to say the 3 port is the older design. (don't quote me on that. It's an old conversation I had and I am tired right now).

Is that new engine CARB compliant?
