Take a look at his books and profit/loss statements for the last couple years. If he's being honest, he won't have a problem with you looking.
Coffey, Midwest Trucker, Swine hauler and 1 other person Thank this. -

Do your math, being sure to include every single expense. Don't just look at the obvious expenses.
Here is a partial list:
Cost of vehicle on a per- mile basis, estimating life expectancy (mileage)
Cost of fuel
Cost of vehicle insurance
Cost of cargo/ commercial use insurance
Driver pay
Driver per diem
Drivers SS contribution
Drivers Workmans Comp
Drivers unemployment Comp
Driver benefits such as holiday, sick, vacation pay, and health benefits.( Assuming you are not running a sweat shop, and actually allow the driver to lead a dignified life, not unlike yourself).
Cost of tolls
Cost of maintenance
Cost of tires
Cost of downtime
80% of 2700 is $2160, or 72 CPM
On a per mile basis i calculate approximately 70 CPM for your expenses. Netting you 2 pennies per mile. Or 60 bucks.
Not exactly a get rich scheme.homeskillet, Espressolane and Western flyer Thank this. -
One accident and your gonna loose everything you have. Truckers including vans and box trucks get sued for big awards more then anybody.
Western flyer Thanks this. -
I know they are not doing all of that for their drivers. Unless they are 1099 the drivers I am not sure. I will see how they are doing it and thanks for the advice. -
There is a certain obligation here, yes?
otherwise you are just another greedy scumbag sweat shop. ( not suggesting that YOU are, because I don't pretend to know your motive, just speaking generally.)
it's all a cost of doing business. Legitimately.Western flyer Thanks this. -
A van load out to cali sounds great but getting work back to a good area, not likely. -
Because these aren't sleeper equipped trucks. Hotel costs would be a large expense, OTR.
During an inspection the driver could be asked for receipts for places they slept.Coffey and Swine hauler Thank this.
