To keep things as basic and straight-forward as possible: We do not own a tractor/trailer and have worked with a couple of brokers in the past to get our gear from location to location. I'm just wondering if it's possible to find owner/operators without going on a load board or through another broker for some of our movements. We don't send our gear out very often, which is why we haven't subscribed to the load boards as of yet. We currently have gear in central Florida that would require 2 53' loads to the west coast next month.

Any suggestions or advice before we sign on to DAT or similar?

Trucking companies like Landstar, Bennett, Admiral Merchants, Mercer and some others are all o/o that are leased on. You can call these companies yourself and ask for quotes for your loads.

Just be specific and adamant with them that you do not want them to broker out your loads.

Aren't those companies acting as a broker themselves?

Thanks for the replies thus far. We specialize in aviation conferences and trade shows. The majority of our equipment is portable air conditioners, ground power units (electric), and other electrical components/equipment (cables, distribution panels, etc). Equipment weight for us in a 53' dry van is typically in the 30-35k lb range.

No. They may broker some loads when they do not have capacity, or when the rate is so cheap they can't get one ofntheir own O/Os to take it. But they are not primarily in the business of brokering freight.

It’s going to be expensive no matter what. Especially since that gear has to come back to Florida I’m assuming.

Was your experience with brokers in the past less then desirable? Like you said, you can sign up to DAT but obviously your no expert on vetting carriers. However, that doesn’t mean it would go bad.

The big carriers IMO I’d find hard to trust since your freight isn’t important to them like it is to you. So, I can see how you would prefer working with a small independent company.

Wish I could give more advice. We’re not allowed to solicit business on this forum or I’d see about helping out. Maybe there is a smallish local company around you with 10 to 25 trucks or something that goes west regularly.
