Negotiating out of driver facing cameras

Remember cpm isn't everything if you have good benefits, good routes, good dispatch, good equipment, etc... and generally if you are happy and comfortable making at least half decent pay. I came from a company that... technically yeah I could make 1500-2000 a week, but everything else about them is #### and they have a bunch of elaborate ways of shorting your check.

 

Zero chance of negotiating you not using the camera. Why you ask. Well there is only one reason carriers put driver facing cameras in their trucks. That's because the discount the insurance company gives them is greater than the cost of the system. There is no way a single driver will make more than the discount of 350 trucks.

 

Depends on how their insurance is calculated, is it a package deal or a per-driver/truck basis
Gonna try negotiating it, I doubt it will work but I refuse to drive with a camera and will have to work somewhere else

 

Swift has many more trucks than that.
In the end, for some reason, it seems it wasn't cost effective for them.

I seen that as a title to a thread a few months ago, but I would agree. There are plenty of fantastic opportunities out there that don’t require you to be under constant surveillance.

The company I got my CDL with ran driver facing cameras. I somehow put up with it for over 1.5 years, probably because the majority of my time there I had a fleet manager that didn’t call me about anything. When he quit, I got a new dispatcher that called me like once a week on how I can “improve.” One example I hit my air horn being cut off on a light turning read, not sure what set it off whether it was the harder then usual braking or the air horn. But this idiot calls me “I see you used your air horn there on the drive cam, how can we better this in the future, what did you do wrong?”

they are absolutely not there to help you. I got into an accident maybe 2 weeks into having my cdl while I was turning, a car that was sitting at a red light shot out in front of me(on my green arrow.). Anyways that’s besides the point. I was deemed not at fault, company proceeded to send me to a terminal for “additional training,”. I was then dropped like 1-2 CPM for the quarter. And to top it all off!!! They would NOT share the footage of the camera facing both ways with me. They’re only covering themselves.

 

Offer to supply your own camera not there's. If they decline and go insurance yadda yadda just find someone else.

No shortage of trucking companies.

I've worked for a company that has driver facing cameras but I was hauling people inside. Not myself. And I was glad to have it because people act well.... Silly.

 

Swift is also self insured, (which really just means a very high deductible, like 1 million dollars when I was there) so the balance changes from a company with only 350 trucks.

If you're an experienced driver who a clean safety record there is no need for a driver having camera.

If it's a training company I could understand it because you can't trust noobs.
