    Hi Everybody!

I still have roughly a year to go before I get OTR, but I was wondering if anybody could impart some knowledge on what a new driver might be able to realistically net per week in their first year.

Im looking at going bulk or flatbed for a year or two, then settling into a LTL or line haul gig so I can have normal home time. Just wondering what I might be able to realistically bring home while I'm on the road so I can pre-plan as far as my bills/mortgage and whatnot. Should I just try to save as much money as I can now because my pay may be pretty lean in my first year? Are their big pay differences to a first year driver with regards to dry van vs flatbed vs bulk?

So far, when the time is right, I fully intend on applying to schneider bulk and TMC. I'll also throw in some apps with local outfits such as OD and Yellow, but I'm thinking they will want some experience first.

Any info or insight offered would be much appreciated!!

Net is really next to I.lossible to say, everyone's situation is different. Gross is what you should probably look for then you can figure out your tax burden and whatever else and that will leave you with your net.

As long as you stay away from the bottom feeder companies, your first year should likely gross between $35k and 45k, but even that is a wide range becuase there are too many variables to give you a good estimate. Others may take a different guess.

Thanks for the reply, kmac. Do you think that $35-45 gross be for dry van, or any type of hauling?

@Thull can probably give you some real numbers for schneider bulk. I can tell you from first hand experience that I made just about $38k (looking at my w2) in schneider van from April 6th to end of year. So far in 2017 I'm at 10500 through the pay period that ended past Saturday, so in 11 months I'm at what? 48500? Should be right on track of 54k a year.

One of the guys I trained with went to tmc and quit about 6 months later because he wasn't bringing home over $600 a week anymore. But that's one guys story that he told me, not first hand experience.

Either way, good luck out there

Pretty much for most as a new driver... Van; reefer; Flats etc. Tanker may bring a little more, but with a good solid safe year under your belt, you can increase that pretty quick, kind of like Friday is pointing out.

As with anything in life, the more proficient you are, the better things get.

Like it or not, new drivers tend to makes some wrong turns and get lost a lot quicker than an experienced driver... This costs money in lost time etc. Just one example, but get started and you should be fine sooner rather than later.

Roger that Kmac. I'm figuring my first year pay won't be lighting the world on fire, but the sooner I get my experience, the better. I'm thinking of just saving up as much as I can so during my first year I can definitely make sure my bills are covered. I'm also not shy about being away from home, so I'm thinking that will help with earning more pay too.

I started with Swift Transportation but only stayed a month due to I had a baby on the way & wanted to be home more. Also those numbers I gave you I should mention that I'm a regional driver & home on the weekends. So if you are OTR you can make more.
