Yep, it appears the IRS has changed their mind and that FET will have to be paid on them. Still worth it depending on your application.

Agree. Even with the IRS not tightening the screws on FET and gliders, they still are an incredible value compared to the emission laden junk on the market. My $112K glider would have been $125K with FET and I still would have jumped at it just as fast. I am sure, now that the IRS is jumping on this, that it might not be too long before the EPA starts messing things up.
But my thoughts have always been, if the government cracks down on gliders, it is only because of the lost revenue. They could give a rip about what you put in a truck. They want the money. So far, they have not been getting it with gliders. -

Detroit's never got in the 8s and even in the 7s mpg in the late 90s, now all of a sudden we are getting 9mpg, what a crock of dog s h i t !!!!!

Everything else has improved. Lubrication, tires, aerodynamics, driveline, trailers, and even roads.
That combined with how Mich progress we have made on the Detroit, yes its possible. Aftermarket manifolds, 171702 turbos, plus 8309 cam and 5915 injectors. There was never a factory Detroit like that. -

Differentials:
Amboid vs. hypoid
Oil:
Nobody can argue todays oil is definitely better, especially having more synthetic options. Synthetic wasn't standard decades ago for the driveline.
Engine
5915 injectors, 8309 cam, custom tune, aftermarket manifold, 171702 turbo. There's nothing that came from the factory like that, and ask any detroit expert, that combo will get you incredible mpg. There's lots of different injectors and cams used on a detroit, and they all affect mpg. Everyone knows timing affects power and MPG.
Tires:
Not just super singles, todays standard tire options are much more vast, and MPG improvements help. How many people ran m726's for years? Those tires are HORRIBLE for mpg.
Aerodynamics:
The "aerodynamic" trucks of the 90s are now longer considered aerodynamic.
And the big one : $4 a gallon fuel! How many guys are still running 70+? -
Even a early 2000 truck? synthetics have been around for years, I'm not talking about the 80's, pinion high or low isn't going to gain much, its more for vibration, a manifold isn't going to do much for mpg either, I do agree on the speed is a big factor, and your tuning also, I just don't see 9mpg, maybe at 48 mph downhill..........................
