Paper logs cost me $2/month. ELD through the carrier will cost me $45/month...a $43/month increase, not to mention the days that might run a little long that'll add $100 or so for a motel room a stones throw from the house. If I go the route I'd like to, it'll run me a 1-time fee of around $850...and then more if/when stuff wears out, breaks, or otherwise needs replacing. Even if nothing ever goes wrong and the system lasts forever without any flaws, that's STILL a minimum of 35 YEARS before I reach the break-even point compared to paper logs, and again, that still doesn't factor in the extra motel rooms that might be necessary just a stones throw from making it home.
The alternative is to run strictly local, which also cuts into revenue as the work isn't always available that doesn't leave that 100 air-mile radius.
CARB hasn't and won't cost me a single dime. They are irrelevant to anyone like me who never goes anywhere near Calif---ya.Dharok, poppapump1332, Socal Xpress and 1 other person Thank this. -

Unless HOS only includes drive time over 5 mph that is.
HOS actually includes line 4 which I reckon is abused more by the average eld user that it is by me. It also includes the most important rule, the one that can't be enforced electronically.
Remember, the Walmart driver that took out Tracy Morgan was eld compliant.Pedigreed Bulldog, 25(2)+2 and DL550CAT Thank this. -
The E-logs at least put a firewall between drivers who want to follow the rules and company shenanigans and we've all seen what those look like. Or at least any of us who've worked as a company driver in a sleeper cab operation. The driver only has limited control over the E-logs and they act as an otherwise impartial third party arbitrator between the inevitable driver/dispatcher power squabbles. (This is why I'm happier running local if I have to drive a truck for somebody else...the scenery gets boring and it gets routine but it takes the whole HOS imbroglio between the driver and the company mostly off the table.)Midnightrider909 Thanks this. -

I get the "infringement of liberty" angle many are taking on this. But between you, me and the fence post, with the words and arguments chosen by some, some of you are just further supporting the case to mandate eLogs [for all]. I recommend some of you remain in the shadows and let others speak on your behalf.
And some of the rest? Well let's just say ...

I still don't see how you people think this will change the industry & how it will affect the over all trucking industry. The system has already been in place for 80% of the trucking industry for several years. Whether the ELD mandate is put in service or not, the industry itself isn't going to change. Its only going to change for a very few people at this point.
At this point, the industry is what it is & works like it works. Some of you guys are acting like its the end of the world & that the industry is going to change because of this. Some of you think that rates are going down. Some think pay will go down, etc, etc, on & on. Its not going to be a dimes worth of difference if/when the mandate is put in place. The industry is functioning right now, just like it will be next July.
The industry isn't going to change. The pay, rate, the amount of freight & everything else in this industry is not going to change. The industry is what it is cause 80% of the industry already operates this way. The industry is set. The few drivers, trucks & companies that are going to experience a change isn't going to change the industry.
Now, let me say. I ain't happy about the ELD mandate. I hate it & I ain't happy about it even a little bit. But, regardless of how much I dislike it, the only thing that's going to change is the way I log.... for me. Period. It ain't gonna change the industry. The way the industry operates right now, is the way its gonna operate a year from now. My likes, dislikes, desires, wants, opinions nor anything else will change the industry & how it works. It ain't gonna change how much freight I get or that needs to be moved. It didn't change for Werner, Schnieder, Wal-Mart or Swift & it ain't gonna change for you, me or the next company cause the industry works the way it works at this point with 80% of the trucks/companies/drivers already in place with ELD's.
Some of yall act like this whole industry is gonna go up like an Atom bomb if/when ELD mandate hits.
I-t.... a-i-n-t... g-o-n-n-a.... c-h-a-n-g-e..... a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.
I don't like it but it is what it is.peterd Thanks this.
