I'm new here obviously. First off I would like to say this is a great site with a lot of great people on it, so to all, thanks for taking the time for posting here and keeping America running. Here is my deal, I want to drive a truck for a living, I went to college, did everything I was told I had to do, but I still was not happy, I'm 27 now and I realized I want to drive a truck for a living, this is what I was meant to do. I have been around big rigs since I could remember. My dad has driven for 23 years, 16 years OTR with the van lines and 25 years total in the van lines industry, he now drives local for a beer distributor. My uncle who has driven for about 40 years, is still OTR the van lines also. So I know what the lifestyle entails and what will be expected of me, I get that. Right now I'm studying the California CDL manual going to get my permit. I know noobs here always ask the same question on who should they go with; I know who not to go with E-N-G-L-A-N-D. As the old joke goes Every New Guy Leaves After Ninety Days. But everything else for me is up for grabs. As much as it might not be the best idea, company training is probably the way I would have to go. Thoughts?

Hi and welcome, how about getting your CDL and then going with your dad or uncle for awhile and get some real experience out here. I don't know their circumstances but if they've been around that long you can't get better than what they could show you. Maybe try the uncle first, if he's been with them that long maybe his company would let him bring you along and train you and then move up to driving for them. Just an idea, sometimes these older companies will give a guy a brake when they know somebody thats been with them that long. Good luck to ya!!
Paloma Thanks this. -
Central Refrigerated has a good program for company training.
Meanwhile, get a passport, TWIC, and tanker/hazmat endorsements for even more good paying opportunities. -
Good advise so far, thanks. I did try to get a job at said van lines company but with no experience moving or driving, it was a no go.

Where do you live? That will help give you ideas on where to go.

I'm in Southern California
-
I would look into System transport.

Being in Southern California I'd look into Robertson's Transport. My understanding is that they do training AND licensing, all local work too. I'd be working there but their minimum age requirement is 25 (I'll be 24 in May). Another thing to consider with Robertson's is that they run all doubles I think, so not only would you be working local but also getting doubles experience. Just my thoughts, unless you're set on going OTR.
