I am 52 and after years as an executive in the construction industry, I have been struggling to find and keep work since being laid off in mid 2008. My ex father-in-law was a trucker and trainer at a truck driving school, he's been trying to get me to go in to truck driving for years. Well, now I am ready to take the plunge. I have been accepted at Central Refrigerated and Prime to attend their training. I have read all the horror stories about company schools, but economics is a big part of the decision. Now I am trying to decide which company to go with. Any help from someone who's been through these company trainings would be greatfully accepted.

What an honor it has been to meet you guys on line like this. My decision to get into this line of work came about four months ago. Since then my life has changed dramatically. It's been a harrowing ride...but now it's time for another turn in the road. I expect Schneider to graduate me this week, and assign me a truck. As a newbie I a sure it will have billions of miles...and probably smell of BO and cigarettes ..but I can live with that. I am so excited to put the hammer down and merge onto this new highway. My family needs some attention now...I have to prove to them that I'm not abandoning them...that I'll be involved in their lives...be on top of home emergencies etc. If this line of work is something you'd like to do...but are fearful...take a deep breath....ask for Devine guidance....and proceed! Godspeed in 2012.

Good luck and stay safe! -
It comes down to a personal risk assessment. If you go to a carrier's school..and don't end up liking it there...you have to pay for the school....or you have to stay and work off your debt. When you go to a private school...Schneider, and most others will pay off your tuition...this gives you a little more freedom of choice, once you get into a place and find out what it's really like.

Markus, how was the 4 hour written test, and what was it all about?
-
They give you a simulated trip .... messages like the qualcom would spit out...a scheduled assignment... you have to plan the trip...respond on the computer as you would if it were real... figure what time you need to leave...take in account your DOT break, your 11 hour driving limit...your 70 hour limit... plan where the fuel will need to be purchased, where you'll spend the nights...then, respond to problems they throw at you along the way...like a breakdown...or a DOT inspection...keep a simulated log for every day... not terribly hard...but long and tedious.. it's open book..but you have to know what to look for and how to get the answers.

Great hearing from all you "old guys", Markus, Dip, Parheel, La Pine. I am retired on SS and plan on attending school starting March 2 at CDL College Truck Driving School in Aurora Colorado as I live in Grand Junction Co.. I have been studying my Colorado CDL Manual and feel fairly confident having taken ALL the practice exams I could find on line. I am going to take them all, Hazmat, Class A, Doubles & Triples, Tankers, etc. I passed my DOT for the state for attending the school and taking the test. I joined the local Gold's Gym to get back into shape as I thought I was done working. I do weight training 3 days a week and alternate with carido the other 3. Doing good.
I hope to continue to hear from all of you as you proceed on your journey. Keep up the posts and I will continue to read them and enjoy them.
