I'm beginning to sound like all the rest of you older guys who have been thru this process....I decided I wanted to go with Prime....but, I've been unemployed too long for them....so, the search continues. I want a company that will load me up with miles...long haul...I want to start out wearing a parka....and end up in shorts..then back again. I contacted swift,,,she was very nice,,,,they seem to have what I'm looking for...then my instructor said he wouldn't wish Swift on his worst enemy. I keep coming back to Roehl....or Schneider...but I don't want to unload trucks at the Dollar Store. Millis won't hire inexperienced unless they graduate from their school....Stevens training period is never ending on starvation wages... I haven't talked with US Xpress....should I? Help!

You and I have 'met' on Wedge's thread. As to USX my ex got a job there brand new CDL and had been out of work at that time I think 2 1/2 years or longer. From the experience he had there no complaints and you see I am from NY too. He was based out of PA for his DC and ended up with the Dollar Tree act. I agree you don't want to be lumping your own truck out at 3 or more stores -PITA! But he got that run cuz they needed someone and it was out for the week and home every weekend. The pay was not bad and I can not speak to miles (Like Wedge who has been getting decent miles) as he was doing short runs in the NE and getting paid for unloading too. Again no complaints about USX despite them being a ''bottom feeder.'' Also the ex could bring the tractor home cuz there is a secure lot in Rochester to drop the trailer in. BTW he lost the job due to an accident completely his fault. The truckers were all autos and Volvos or Freighliners.

I wish you good luck and I am glad you started you own thead as it's been interesting to read your journey so far!

    Markus and Wedge Thank this.

I appreciate everyone's help...I had my 3rd drive today out on our range at the old Griffiss AFB. Ran laps for a while...and feel like the shifting up and down is pretty much a done deal. Most of the 4 hour session was backing....believe it or not I did better with alley dock than an off set. When I turn the brain off and let it function I do better...when I try and talk myself thru the bassackward process of back turning... I drive again on Friday...this time on the public streets.....LOOK OUT!

Glad you are getting the hang of it all! Keep us informed on your journey!
As for finding a company suited to your needs, I am kinda in your situation. I'm really not the slightest bit interested in regional. I dont want to be stuck in NE area. I want to explore this great country but I dont want to get totally screwed by working for the wrong company and there really dont seem like there is a lot of choices out there so I know what you are talking about.

Didn't see Central or FFE on your list, just a couple more to look at. Both seem to have more positive than negative on here.

I had a little accident a few months ago...before I ever thought of driving professionally. Not that that would have made a difference. But, I was backing out of my driveway...like I have thousands of times before....I am sure that I didn't stop...I just backed up checked out both sides as I was backing....and wham.....I backed into a fast moving car. The timing was just perfect...she was in my blind spot as I was backing and I never saw her. Nobody was hurt. I backed into the back door-rears wheel well of her car. Anyway...the judge didn't really find me at fault...but , US Xpress said ...sorry...if you had done that with a truck..somebody would have been killed. They're right... But it is enough for them not to consider me for a job. I haven't encountered that with anyone else....yet anyway. I am beginning to think that I should go with Schneider and that that regional NE job...then after 6 months take OTR. Roehl is still in the running..but in the last 2 days my connection with Prime and USX has disintegrated. I won't be driving again for a couple of days...but I'm feeling more confident now...Pre trip is down pretty good..

    Wedge Thanks this.
