You're bigger barrier is a lack of experience. It's a tough job market in our world right now, as it's a big time freight recession, and even when things are going well, it's still difficult to get local jobs right out the gate as a rookie. You're competing with more seasoned drivers. Be prepared to take a road job in order to gain experience so you can get the long term job that you want. I'm not saying it's impossible to get a local job out of school, but it's not a likely path. So be prepared to sacrifice a little in the short term.

Work a Ready Mix Trucking job until you turn 21. They're entry level jobs that are open to anyone with a valid Class B or A. They'll teach you how to mix the concrete, dispense it, washout tank; etc. It'll be a great start for you because most of those companies pay $25 and up in the Indianapolis area. Check Indeed for Ready Mix Trucking jobs. Once you start driving Ready Mix and making $$$, you might not care to drive a CMV

You likely are not getting much work until age 23, not 21. Insurance puts that requirement on trucking companies. The industry is very slow right now, THERE ARE TOO MANY TRUCK DRIVERS. Drivers with bullet-proof work histories and perfect driving/criminal histories are not getting hired right now. Food service companies like Sysco, Performance Food Group are usually hiring because it requires lots of physical labor. Also garbage truck companies are usually looking for more drivers. Since you cannot do CDL work across state lines you are really limited on where you can work. It's up to you to investigate jobs before you start spending money. You've heard of people going into massive debt for worthless college degrees. The blue collar version is going to CDL school with a criminal record, bad driving record, DUI, or no work history. You are supposed to look before you leap into things.Trucker61016 Thanks this.
