New CDL holder needs help.

    I recently graduated from a certified training program and have a couple question as I am having trouble finding employment. I have been searching this forum and others for months before making my decision to get my cdl.

    1. I have an 8 year old felony which I know closes some doors to me. I have been applying to companies that will accept that but received 2 speeding tickets nearly 3 years ago bothe exactly at 15mph over so everyone I have spoken with has passed on me. Some say come back in a year, others say nothing. Is there anyone who will hire me OTR or regional? I live in eastern Virginia.

    2. I can get local employment driving a dump, waste hauling, or straight truck but when I try to go OTR later will these companies force me to go back to school?

    With that record, I'd try one of those local jobs and get this stuff farther in the past. The speeding tickets are killers and being that recent might make it tough to get on anywhere. If I were in your position, I'd try a concrete or delivery co. Some concrete co's have great benefits, good pay, and your home every night.

    Someone else will have to tell you about retraining. I know of some smaller co's who need drivers bad and you just have to have had a CDL for two years to satisfy the insurance co.. They'll size you up and train you informally theirselves.

    I doubt that you would have to go back to training to go otr... I would go the local route till the tickets drop off and if you still want to go otr then do it then...

    You completed training to receive your CDL, not one on one with a trainer OTR, is this correct? Then of course you would "need training" for OTR, wouldn't you? :biggrin_2554:

    I know I will need to do company training, I've just been hearing about people being forced to do a refresher if they don't have recent experience or graduated from a school within 30 days or so.

    You won't need retraining as long as you drive a tractor trailer combo..

    It's true. Some companies require you to go back to school if you let your license lapse or haven't been OTR for a while. I woldn't be looking for a job with them ,though.

    You might check some towing and truck tire repair companies as well. They need people with a CDL and a little mechanical ability to pull in broken down trucks.

    I have heard that most companies, if you haven't been in a TT in over a yr you had to go out with a trainer for a minimum of two weeks. If your trainer feels before the two weeks is up you could go for you road test so you can get your own truck.. With Swift 1 yr= 2 weeks 3yr and over usually all 6 weeks or by trainer discretion..

    The answer is yes you will need training to go OTR after being a local driver, although it is not "school" training as you already did.... They will make you go out with a "trainer" for several weeks to learn OTR with a new company.. You will be with a trainer from 2 weeks up to several months depending on the company... so yes you will be trained again after being a local and starting as a OTR with a new company... No big deal...
