Need some insight on previous years employment verification. I was self employed for the past 15 years. As a new CDL driver any future employer needs to verify a minimum of 3 years employment. Will my tax returns be enough to satisfy that requirement? Again, Class B local driving company. TIA

    Tax returns usually work.

Requirements are the new company must attempt to verify past employment. Tax returns are usually ok as the FMCSA auditors tend to see that as a valid attempt. It's by no means a legal requirement though, so some companies will not accept it.
If you were self employed and tax returns are not accepted simply find out what is. Drivers are always needed, especially new drivers as they tend to get paid less. Companies will help you figure out what's needed to get the verification done.

Let me make this easy for you. That 3-year work history is not a history as a driver in a DOT-regulated carrier. Part 391.23 really doesn't apply to you. 391.23(c)(4) Take your tax information as well as a written explanation of the work you did and the time periods you worked. The carrier will go over it. Most will accept what you give them. What you are doing is accounting for the time. There is no rule that states you MUST have been employed.

    Ateam1974 Thanks this.
