I have heard that there are new medical standards starting at the end of this month. What are they and how will it affect the industry?

[h=2]DOT Medical Card Information[/h] NEW MEDICAL CARD REQUIREMENTS FOR CDL HOLDERS
EFFECTIVE May 21, 2014
A new federal requirement for Commercial Driver License medical cards goes into effect May 21, 2014, and will require that your medical examination be completed by an examiner on the National Registry as established by federal law in 2012.
Information about this program was sent to medical providers across the state. To see if your medical provider has been certified, or for more information about the National Registry please visit http://nrcme.fmcsa.dot.gov.
You may also contact the Division of Motor Vehicles at 907-269-5551 or visit our website http://doa.alaska.gov/dmv/akol/cdl.htm for more information.
Please be aware: This does NOT MEAN they need to go and get a new medical card. This is strictly moving forward for drivers obtaining a new medical card after May 21, 2014. Your existing medical information will not be removed, deleted or become unusable and will be valid through the expiration dates that we have on file.

So whats the point ? Is it so we wont have to carry around the small medical card and all our medical info will be on that black strip on our CDL ??
-
The only thing new this month. Is you have to visit a registered doc now. No more going to just any doc.
The medical card thing has been around couple years now. -
The problem with this idea of "trained" doctors to compete the exam is we are treated at a higher standard as are pilots but are not pilots and don't need to have a physical like a pilot. I mean having a "registered" doctor (or PA or Nurse) to be the one to examine us and determine if we are "fit" to drive is really a joke. Having a doctor who went through medical school for years, has a practice and is able to make to help people and make decisions seems to be one who should not have to take a course in how to fill out a form. But having a PA or a Nurse do the exam seems to circumvent the idea that a doctor needs the training before he is qualified to fill out a form.

The big change is that you will need to make sure you send a copy to your state DMV so your license is kept current. If they want to continue with this nonsense, they should have the medical cards expire at the same time as your CDL. It would cut down on paperwork. Oh, I forgot. We are talking about the government. Federal regulators wanted to push this through without thinking it through. They made these rules about having to go to certain doctors. The problem is that there are not enough doctors who are willing to jump through the hoops. Some who did them before will no longer be willing to deal with the extra garbage.

Speaking with a Ohio State Trooper who is a Motor carrier cop about this the other day, she said it is so when any officer pulls you over and scans your CDL your medical card information comes up. It prevents people from having more than one medical card like drivers would have more than one CDL back in the day.
25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
It will increase the cost, my provider raised it 25% and said she has to pass a 100 hour course to get the certification, hopefully, she is able to get the certification.

All I've seen so far is they clip me for more money every time I get near these folks.
Reword the same old procedure and charge us more for it .
