Billroy,
Before you make the decision to go with USX, KLLM, or any of the other big "corporate" trucking companies... Sit down, relax, grab a cup-o-joe, and do some searching on the interwebs, or even break out that handy dandy dusty ol phone book, and look up some of the smaller "local to where you live" trucking firms. Many of these smaller companies run all 48 just like the big boys, and the generally (not always), but generally pay better, offer better benefits, home time, etc.
If you are gung-ho on going with a big outfit, make sure you do your research thoroughly! There are many guys out there who have been with these companies for years and love it. There are also many who only last a few months, or weeks, before they realize they are being bent over with no lube, or a kiss.
If you already have your CDL, you are at a smaller advantage than some others who go with these big companies, you may not have to sign a contract, and would be free to leave if it is not for you. But in my personal experience, and keep in mind this is just my opinion, it is always best to work for a smaller company. You are a person there, not a number. Believe me, that means a LOT!!!
Anyhow, just tossing in my 2 cents, ultimately the choice is yours.Billroy Thanks this. -
From a safety point of view.
Kllm has a much better record. -
Thanks guys.

Midlife career change. Just completed CDL school so no OTR experience yet. Have done alot of research to narrow down my choices ( have pre-hire letters from several companies - Werner, Star, Crete, TMC etc.) . Most "local" companies require 1 to 2 years experience, and will not take on student drivers.
Looking to bite the bullet to get some miles under me.

Billroy,
Again, this is my own personal experience and things are different from company to company, but the company that I work for clearly posted their requirements on thier website. "Must be 25 years old, and have at least 2 years verifiable experience". I was hired on there at 23, granted I had the experience, but I was 2 years below their age requirement. One thing I am sure you know is that it never hurts to ask. If you think a smaller local company may be a better choice for you, rather than biting the bullet. Call them up! Be polite and respectful, and see if they would be willing to "give you a chance". That is what I did, and here I am, 9 years later with the same company that I sought that "chance" from.
Anyhow, I know my reply was kinda off the topic of the information you were actually seeking. My apologies. -
GSPete1979 - Your right, it never hurts to ask.

USX for sure, otherwise you might have to listen to my jokes in the lounge some day!
