last week I went to my local community college to find out about truck school. I started this week, and so far I'm pretty impressed with my instruction/instructors. I was pretty rough first time behind the wheel, but today,my second time on the road was a lot better. I think that has a lot to say for my trainer (hard to teach an old dog...) anyhow, its been great fun so far,and I really like the feeling behind the wheel of that big old rig.
Employment in this industry looks pretty much wide open to me,as far as oppurtunites go,and I guess I'm lucky as far as not having to be indentured to anyone for training. Today I listened to a recruitor from Schnider, and to be honest they sound like a pretty good company...I'm open to any suggestions or advice for future job prospects. I live in eastern Virginia, and would like to stay away from the northeast. From what I can tell so far you need at least 6 months otr before any premium company wants to even talk,so I'm wondering how to sort through all the info and choose a company that will be true to their word.

Yeah, it's a bit confusing, isn't it? Know what I'd do? I'd concentrate on the smaller companies with terminals fairly close to your home turf. Might not make any difference, but my theory is that because there is a terminal you'll have a place to park the rig, get it repaired, pick up an occasional load, etc...

If you decide to go with Schneider then tell them driver...

Just kidding. But seriously, I haven't had any major problems with them yet, though I am coming up on the 90 days and may get some trouble about not having HZ yet...

Anyway, they have good locations, company store, blah, blah, bla....

I have had to sit for 1 day, in almots 3 months that's a pretty strong statement for load reliability, as that day was simply because I had to deliver at some guy's farm lol. Well, there was the bliazzard that ripped Chi-town apart, had to sit for that too, but got paid since it wasn't my fault.

The small companies can be a good choice, but the frieght can be lighter, and there's no question it's harder to get those jobs as a new driver.

Stay away from: Werner, US Express, JB Hunt, a few others I can't recall at this time. Check the section for rating companies on the forum, it'll tell you everything you did, or didn't, want to know about the major carriers, and some of the less-so major ones.

Good luck, hope it works out for you and you find a good company.

    Stay safe driver

I just graduated from nc oldest trucking school and also live east of 95 My question is do you apply with smaller companies on computer or hand carry resume and application for best results?
