Hi all new to this message board along with trucking. I am currently in the process of obtaining my class A CDL, and had a question in regards to the future employment opportunity with Willow run Foods out of Conklin New York. a little background history on my end, I grew up around trucks as my father has been driving trucks for over 25 years and has been an owner operator for 10 of those 25 years. turning 22 in a few months it has been any interest of mine in wanting to drive trucks and came across the option of Willow Run foods because of their 1 year commitment for employment and they require 0 experience with driving. people that I've talked to have both said good and bad about the company, however I was wondering if any of you would have any more info in regards to Willow Run foods. also I will be obtaining my CDL through the BOCES program as it is the cheapest and easiest method for me. My goal is to get two years under my belt and then drive with my father. I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section, do please move if I did. Thank you all for taking the time out to read and reply!

i guess i would ask you what your father does in trucking. willow run seems like a tough job to just be "getting a couple years' experience" to do something else. dont get me wrong...its one of the best blue collar jobs in broome county. but it also requires a tremendous amount of physical labor. in 24-36 hours ( i forget how long a run is exactly), you will unload 45k lbs of product by huffing them out of the truck and onto a hand cart. the 1st few stops are pretty easy, but by the end i was exhausted. couldnt imagine doing it day in and day out. i have yet to hear anything bad about the company...if you are physically able and willing to handle the physical nature of the job, last i knew the compensation is great, and for someone staying with them they also had decent pension and stock in company. its a few years since ive had dealings with them, to be honest.
id be interested in picking your/your fathers brain about o/o world. does he run under his own authority? amazed to find a neighbor on the site... sorry you live in burnt out industrial wasteland h-e- double hockey sticks

    Big,

If you're considering Willow Run, I would also look at Maine's. They also hire new drivers, last I heard, and do similar work. Good luck with Bo-cheese.

Poker, right now he does runs for Standard Furniture. Him and his employee and his box truck man. However I cover the box truck once in a while. I am aware of the labor involved, more so why I am looking at Willow. Be my way of keeping the shape I am in and I am certain I could load/unload the goods. Too from what I hear it's great for really learning, considering the places you have to deliver to. He's been o/o for years and loves it. Yeah... Not the best area to live in really... Man I appreciate the response, definitely helping me out.

Milkman, I'm looking at maines also. My friend works for the ownoer, so when the owner gets back he gets back, he will call to fill in the info on the job. She does his laundry and such. Boces lol it's the only way CDO workforce sends you so I'm okay with it. Thanks man!

I got my license there. They screwed me into the ground, and continually had no work for me, while hiring on new trainees (without CDL, they're a training place). Left and won't ever go back. Wouldn't recommend, but a friend of mine has made it through 2 years there and isn't bankrupt (but he is looking for the exit).

If you want to get some experience without going with one of the OTR mega-carriers, they can be useful. Get your experience, get hired somewhere else, and kick them to the curb. There are other vastly better places around this area, but they don't advertise often and don't hire novices.
