New driver monitoring product that can tell if you’re smoking behind the wheel

Blame the sue-happy culture:

I have no problem with a driver facing dash cam. Heck, I want one in my truck! Cheap insurance!

But I'm still gonna smoke my cigarettes in MY truck.

 

i can understand...however, going by the article, if the insurance companies lobby DC for stricter laws regarding a driver being impaired, like under the influence from either drugs or alcohol, and can prove that smoking too is a cause of distraction, as well as eating......what are you going to do if the insurance cam takes a snap shot of you puffing away..??

now they got you.

civil rights be darned...when we got that CDL we basically gave the government Carte Blanche in our lives, while on the job.

the laws on the books, or in the making, are run by corporate America for thier profits.

the insurance companies take your premiums, and hope to never have a payout, all so the the alphabet soup board members can get themselves those 27 condos across the world.

and if they cannot, due to lawsuits, they lobby for more laws to clamp down on not only those that abused the system, but even Joe Schmo....

there aren't any caps on payouts for claims, and even if there are the caps are higher than what anyone deserves.

we (well i am retired) are in an industry that WE FAILED to control, all because.....

we all say (or said at one time or another)....




and LET OTHERS do it for us...or is it...DO IT TO us...????

 

This whole camera thing is getting stupid and my company is forcing it on the company drivers too....one of several reasons they always have unseated company trucks but owner ops here seldom leave .
Funny thing is tho that they have no issue with a company driver with a fleet of dogs that smokes up enuff cigs to make Marge shott proud turning they're truck into a tenement on wheels ...I dread having to move a truck cause most are disgusting inside .
As an ex smoker I dont have an issue with smokers but for Gods sake clean it up .

the number of threads on here about cameras and elds is legion.

people have and will continue to quit over it, I've seen many come and go.

Unless, as you say, the price is right.

And a nonsmoker, nondrug user, nonalchoholic, qualified cdl driver gets harder and harder to find.

Supply and demand, pretty simple economics.

 

How about chewers? Brown stains down the driver's side of the cab and spit cups that don't get emptied?

 

smoking deadens your sense of smell and taste. I never noticed how bad my truck (and everything else I was in) smelled like an ashtray until after I quit smoking, took several cleanings before the smell finally went away.

I once went to pick up a D8 caterpillar that was on an off road location many miles down a winter only bush road. the road had several "hummocks" that were tall enough and spanned the right distance to hang up the double drop RGN 16 wheeler by dragging the frame rails. the catskinner was told to meet me at the start of this road to take me to the location in his pickup to see if I could make it out loaded, or if it would be better to walk the D8 out to me.

I pull up to his pickup, get out of my truck and walk around to the passenger side, open the door and almost barfed. this old guy had been spitting his snoose juice all over the passenger side of this brand new company chevy pickup. the seat, the dash, the floor...everything was covered in brown tobacco spit. I refused to get in, told him I'd take my chances with getting hung up on the road on the way out, unload and reload the cat 100 times before I'd ever get in that pickup.

 

Lol they are only getting softer it seems like.

 

If a person is a clean freak by nature they’re not going to instantly turn into a slob because they get a pet. Here the cab of my truck. My dog goes with me everywhere, no shoes allowed in the cab, and I vacuum it daily the same as I did before I got my dog 3 years ago.
