Go to FMCSA.com and read the regulation there. Contact the agency in your state that regulates CDL to determine your home state guide lines. Its my understanding that the need for a CDL is based on the weigh rating (GVWR) of truck and/or trailer and not if the actual weight is 26,001 or over. Read, read, read and read some more...it's better to be legal than to have to worry about getting caught not to mention getting legal and following the advise from other more knowledgable persons will educate you on the correct way which will make you a safer driver. Progessive is the ins I got and you will need 1,000,000 lib and with 2 cars at least 100,000 cargo coverage. I haul 3 and have cargo at 200,000 + 1 mil lib and the annual cost in July will be 8500.00+. Keep in mind I'm 58, clean driving record both violations and reportable accidents for the pass 10+ years . At 20 I can only assume your annual ins cost will exceed mine. I've seen post on here and other forums that drivers are paying 10,000+ a year for ins or their cost will be increased to that.
