Some cultures make it a rule to avoid eye contact as a rule. But I understand what you say. As a habit I avoid eye contact also, but not because I have ill intent or are not trustworthy. When other people are speaking to me, it's easier if I'm not looking directly at them, if I'm not it means I am listening to what they are saying and thinking about it.

But looking at everyone in the eye while they are approaching me, yes I can do better there.

I will start with that. Thank you Six !

I assume that you are an older gentleman by the stories you tell and what you know. What do you admire most in younger people that are wanting more or what is it you did in your 30s or wish you did better?

I like to see a young Man with pride in his craft. Whatever it is you do, do it well and be proud of the job. Whenever you hear someone talk about them average driver’, say to them, “I wouldn’t bother to get out of bed to be average.”

Like the old hands told me, “Good drivers make money. Money doesn’t make good drivers.”

On that note, let me warn you...

If you are young and take pride in your craft, you will find that mediocre drivers that are older than you will HATE you for your work ethic and the pride that you have in your work. They will hope that you fail and rejoice greatly when you do. Do not allow these to affect you or your mindset in any way.

Had a young trucker, 28, whose father rode motorcycle. He wanted to ride with his dad and his dad’s friends. Young gun got into open deck work. 50% of your open deck guys are bikers. Not motorcyclists, bikers. Young gun went out, took the Safety Course, got his M endorsement and bought a Harley Dyna. Suddenly, the hate began.
“Oh, he thinks he’s big and bad because he’s on a Harley.” His dad and his circle of friends all started hating. Seriously? You would think the old man would be proud, but he hates. I told Young Gun to ignore the hate and come ride with me on a thousand mile trip. Everyone was silent when he got home from the ride.

It will surprise you who will turn out to be your haters. Close friends, even family. No one hates a loser. So if you start seeing haters pop up, you’re doing something right.

I saved up 12k my first year with a mega living in the truck without really trying.

No wife no kids no expensive habits so ymmv.

I also paid cash for a used car and spent about $1500 on a week vacation. I think I could have banked close to $20k if I had really tried.
